In this study, an in-depth comparative study was performed focusing on the tune of the rhythm in “Jaebinojunggi,” a gayageum byungchang of masters Deokhwa Jang and Dongjoon Kim. Gayageum byungchang is a field of music that combines gayageum and singing by playing the gayageum and singing at the same time. Commonly, pansori singing method is used, accompanied by sanjo gayageum with gayageum sanjo music grammar. Especially, in the performance of traditional music such as gayageum byungchang, rhythm accompaniment serves a crucial functional role by not only performing general accompaniment function but also as an independent performance act that enhances musical perfection in the same position as the performer. Most of the research on traditional gayageum byungchang has been mainly focused on the pansori method and accompaniment tune comparison of instrumental rhythm. Regarding the gayageum byungchang “Jaebinojunggi,” most of the research is focused on editorial, melody, and rhythm. In other words, there is very little study conducted on the janggu accompaniment rhythm of the gayageum byungchang “Jaebinojunggi”. Therefore, in this study, I conducted a comparative analysis on the gayageum byungchang “Jaebinojunggi,” which can express more complex melodies by using the gayageum and a greater variety of rhythms compared to the pansori “Jaebinojunggi”. The analysis is focused on the accompaniment rhythm of the masters Deokhwa Jang and Dongjoon Kim. In this study, the musical world of each master Deokhwa Jang and Dongjoon Kim were analyzed through their respective activity histories. Based on this, I analyzed the characteristics and forms of their rhythm accompaniment by comparing the Hwijoongjoong- mori rhythm and Joongjoong-mori rhythm rhythm, which are the rhythm compositions of Deokhwa Jang’s and Dongjoon Kim’s “Jaebinojunggi”. For this purpose, I analyzed the rhythm of the sound and the gayageum by distinguishing Hwijoongjoong-mori rhythm and Joongjoong-mori rhythm, the rhythm compositions of “Jaebinojunggi” in order to study the common Sobak rhythm structure of the two masters. Through the analytical and comparative study on the characteristics of the masters Deokhwa Jang and Dongjoon Kim’s gayageum byungchang“Jaebinojunggi” focusing on the rhythm tunes, the following conclusions could be obtained. First, masters Deokhwa Jang and Dongjoon Kim’s gayageum byungchang “Jaebinojunggi” differ in their speed. However, in each movement, Hwijoongjoong-mori rhythm 3 sobak rhythm appears 14 times, 2 sobak rhythm 23 times, 3+2 sobak rhythm 28 times, and 2+3 sobak rhythm 9 times. Also, Joongjoong-mori rhythm 3 sobak rhythm appears 17 times, 2 sobak rhythm 9 times, 3+2 sobak rhythm 4 times, and 2+3 sobak rhythm 2 times, indicating that a common melodic structure exists.. Second, it was confirmed that in master Dongjoon Kim's accompaniment, he plays only one beat in one or two rhythms, while master Deokhwa Jang’s accompaniment uses a higher frequency than maser Dongjoon Kim’s in one rhythm. In particular, the rhythm’s form of the master Deokhwa Jang’s accompaniment demonstrated a form that is similar to the gayageum melody or the rhythm form of sound. Thirdly, in the Hwijoongjoong-mori accompaniment of gayageum byungchang "Jaebinojunggi," master Dongjoon Kim plays the first beat not with the combined rhythm, but instead with Chaepyeun tune, as if hitting the Maehwa point in the drum accompaniment. On the other hand, master Deokhwa Jang tends to prefer an accompaniment form whose rhythmical structure is similar with the gayageum melody. Finally, in the Joongjoong-mori accompaniment of gayageum byungchang "Jaebinojunggi," master Dongjoon Kim's rhythm closing form is concise, and the rhythm's closing structure similar with the melody's structure. Also, his accompaniment form consists of a closing structure that focuses on the two beats of the 7th and 8th beat in terms of the eight note. On the other hand, master Deokhwa Jang demonstrated a concise form that is similar with the gayageum's sound melody and rhythmical structure. Also, it was observed that until the 1st and 2nd beat, the rhythm form of jajinmori, and in the 3rd and 4th beat, the typical Joongjoong mori's closing form were used as accompaniment forms. Through this comparative analysis on the accompaniment tune characteristics related to the melody of "Jaebinojunggi," the gayageum byungchang of the masters Dongjoon Kim and Deokhwa Jang, I hope that this research will serve as an index for more in-depth research related to janggju accompaniment rhythm of the gayageum byungchang "Jaebinojunggi".
