This paper analyzed Beethoven(Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827)'s third work, 《Cello Sonata No. 3》(Op. 69) composed from 1807-8, from five cello sonatas written from 1796-1815. In this piece Beethoven establishes an equal position between the two instruments, cello and piano, which has important meaning to the musician playing the piano.
In order to study the comparative relationship between the cello and piano in this work, the general period division of Beethoven in various documents was examined but could be applied in the five cello sonatas. Therefore, a new period division applying and comparing characteristics of piano sonatas based on musical diction is suggested other than based on the year of creation of the five cello sonatas. The legitimacy of this division of period is reaffirmed by looking into the changing relationship between the cello and piano in Beethoven's five cello sonatas.
Analysis of the first movement and the third movement of《Cello Sonata No. 3》(Op. 69) reveals that the two instruments are equal in forming the theme. The way to achieve this equal relationship is to construct a theme by playing one theme with different instruments or different tones. Another way is for one instrument to play a single theme, that is, playing in one tone, and then another instrument to acquire the theme in a different tone. This can be seen in the development part.
The analysis of this paper expects that when playing this piece, the pianist will not simply play the accompaniment, but play in the same position as the cello.
