What are the goal and purpose of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song? 1-2. What are the contents of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song? 1-3. What is the teaching-learning method of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song? 1-4. What is the evaluation of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song? 2. What are the effects of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song? 2-1. What are the effects of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song on the musical attitudes of young children? 2-2. What are the effects of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song on the musical aptitude of young children? 2-3. What are the effects of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song on the emotional intelligence of young children?
In this study, to compose the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song, first a literary review on integrated early childhood music education was conducted. After analyzing the needs in early childhood education field, the program’s goals and purposes were set, and the content of young children’s song and the integrated early childhood music education, as well as the teaching-learning method and evaluation method were selected. A program prototype was then developed. The education goals and purposes, education content, teaching-learning method and evaluation method of the newly developed integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song were as follows. First of all, the goal of a integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song is to ‘promote musical attitude, musical aptitude and emotional intelligence in young children through music activities using young children’s song.’ To meet this goals, education purpose were set as follows: 1)‘understanding musical elements through young children’s song’; 2)‘various musical expressions using young children’s song’; 3)‘fostering an attitude that helps understand and moderate one’s own emotions and other’s emotions through young children’s song.’ Second, the content of the program consisted of ‘the aspect of musical elements’ including dynamics, tone, timbre, tempo and rhythm, and ‘the aspect of children’s music education activities’ including singing a young children’s song, playing an instrument, body expressions, music appreciation and music drama. Third, the teaching-learning method of the program consisted that the integrated teaching-learning model uses young children’s song based on the integrated approach to bring in sub-categories of musical elements such as the integration of the dynamics of sound, tone, timbre, tempo and rhythm, as well as early childhood music activities that are the integration of singing a children’s song, playing musical instrument, body expressions, listening to music and music drama. For previous, the teaching-learning stage consists of four steps of exploring, expressing, appreciating and evaluating. The teacher served the role as an instructor that guides students in the acquisition of knowledge and information, a role model, a supporter, someone who formed a musical environment for the children and someone who ran the class in a democratic manner. Fourth, the evaluation of the integrated early children’s music education program using young children’s song was done through formation evaluation and overall evaluation. Formation evaluation was divided into an evaluation of children and an evaluation of the teacher. In the evaluation of children, degree of understanding of the activities, participation rate and satisfaction was assessed through a self-evaluation, while peer evaluation was used to assess the immediate responses of their peers to expressive activities. In the evaluation of the teacher, achievement of goals in music activities for children, understanding of the content of musical activities, the attitude of taking interest and enjoying music, the appropriateness of expressing musical elements, plans for activities and class analysis were evaluated. Overall evaluation reviewed the effectiveness of the program by assessing musical attitude, musical aptitude and emotional intelligence. To verify the effects of the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song, the program was applied to 54 children(the experimental group: 27 children, the comparison group 27 children) in two classes, aged 4 years at E Kindergarten located in Gangwon Province. Children in the experimental group took part in integrated early childhood music education and activities using children’s song over a total of 29 sessions for 15 weeks from August 29 to December 9, 2016. Children in the comparison group took music classes with a focus on the educational activities in the Nuri Curriculum’s everyday theme, led by the classroom teacher. To verify the effects of the developed program, the tools for measuring musical attitude in children developed by Ahn, Jaeshin and Han, Aehyang(1999) and revised by Kang, Bora(2012), and PMMA, a tool to measure musical aptitude in children developed by Gordon(2004) and translated by Yi(2004), as well as the tool for measuring emotional intelligence developed by Lee, Byeongrae(1997) were used. The test on children’s musical attitude consisted of 35 questions, while the test on musical aptitude consisted of 80 questions. The test on emotional intelligence had a total of 31 questions encompassing 4 sub-categories of self-perception and expressive abilities, self-control abilities, perception of others, and moderation of others and interpersonal skills. SPSS 21.0 for Windows was used to analyze the data by group. An independent sample t-test was conducted on the mean of pre and post-scores of each group. The findings were as follows. First, a review of the effect that the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song has on the musical attitude of young children showed that the musical attitude scores of young children in the experiment group were significantly higher than in the control group. The scores for exploring, expressing and appreciating music which are sub-categories of musical attitude were significantly higher in the experiment group than in the control group. This indicates that the program was effective in improving the musical attitudes of young children. Second, a review of the effect that the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song has on the musical aptitude of young children showed that the musical aptitude of young children in the experiment group was significantly higher than in the control group. The scores for rhythm and pitch which are sub-categories of musical aptitude, were found to be higher in the experiment group than in the control group. This indicates that the program is effective in improving musical aptitude in young children. Third, a review of the effect that the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song has on the emotional intelligence of young children showed that the scores for emotional intelligence were significantly higher in the experiment group than in the control group. Scores for self-perception, expressive abilities, self-control abilities, perception of others, and moderation of others and interpersonal skills were all significantly higher. This indicates that the program was effective in improving the self-perception, self expressive abilities and perception of others. As a result, that the integrated early childhood music education program using young children’s song has positive effects on improvement of young children’s musical attitude, musical aptitude and emotional intelligence.
