With an increase in household income and the changes in population structure resulting from a low birth rate, recent years have seen a significant increase in companion animal households in South Korea. Growing affinity with pets are driving the veterinary services market. Veterinarians, meanwhile, face increased competition and shutdowns have rapidly increased due to excess supply of veterinarians. This study aims to examine the spatial distribution characteristics and the locational factors of animal clinics. The analyses applied herein were conducted using the Korean government open data and converting address to the coordinates to investigate the local spatial clustering of animal clinics.
The number of animal clinics of the nation in 2018 was estimated to be approximately 4.5 thousand. 43.6% of the total are located in the Seoul metropolitan area. 27.5% of animal clinics of the Seoul Capital Area are located in Gangnam-gu, Seocho-gu, Songpa-gu and Gangdong-gu. The number of animal clinics of Seongnam in 2018 was estimated to be 1.04 hundred. 67.3%, 17.3%, and 15.4% of the total are located in Bundang-gu, Sujeong-gu, and Jungwon-gu, respectively. The results of these analyses demonstrate that significant regional disparities in veterinarian services exists across the nation.
To investigate the relationship among locational factors and animal clinics, the data were submitted to multiple regression analysis using SPSS version 25.0. The dependent variable was the number of animal clinics and the independent variables were: (a) female population aged 20–39, (b) households living in apartment houses, (c) the number of businesses, (d) the number of urban parks, and (e) the number of hospitals. The results demonstrate that, of these variables, female population aged 20–39 was the strongest predictor of animal clinics (β = 0.736, p 0.05). Also, the number of businesses (β = -0.546, p 0.05), the number of hospitals (β = 0.418, p 0.05), and households living in apartment houses (β = 0.375, p 0.05) were all significant predictors of animal clinics. However, the number of urban parks was not a significant predictor of animal clinics (β = -0.091, p = 0.290).
