Load cycle (0.12-0.2 A/cm2)과 Load trip (0-0.2 A/cm2)의 두 가지 부하조건에서 평가되었고 각각 1443시간 가량 진행되었다. Load trip 및 Load cycle의 열화 요인을 분석하기 위해 임피던스 평가, Distribution of Relaxation times 분석, 깁스 프리 에너지 계산, 그리고 field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) 그리고 energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)를 사용한 사후 분석을 실시했다. 증착한 HfO2는 high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM)과 the transmission electron microscopy (TEM)으로 확인하였다.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are very efficient and clean electrochemical devices which can convert chemical energy to electrical energy while providing diverse benefits; high energy efficiency, fuel flexibility, and narrow installation area. SOFCs are required long-term durability for the successful commercialization of SOFC technology. More than 20,000 h lifetime with frequent thermal cycles are required for stationary and auxiliary power units (APU), respectively. In particular, APU systems are repeatedly stopped and restarted in normal operation, resulting in deteriorating SOFC electrochemical performances. That is, robustness under real operating conditions, even in harsh environments such as large temperature gradients, dynamic variation in electrical load, high fuel utilization operation (fuel and air starvation), and high impurity levels, is a salient and critical technical issue for commercial SOFC systems, because such dynamic conditions could be a crucial factor that determines the SOFC lifetime. SOFCs have been operated at high temperature over 800℃. However, high operating temperature has numerous disadvantage, such as accelerated degradation of cell components, slow start-up time, easily reaction with external sources, and limiting applicability in portable power. Reducing operating temperature to the intermediate temperature for IT SOFCs has investigated by many researchers. In particular, ceria-based electrolytes have received big attraction due to high ionic conductivity at intermediate temperature range. However, the ceria-based electrolytes reduce under low pO_2 with lowering open circuit voltage (OCV) because of the ceria reduction. Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOECs) produce hydrogen using same component as SOFCs. However, SOECs also has a durability issue on cathode due to high oxygen partial pressure at the interface between cathode and electrolyte, leading to delamination and reduced electrocatalytic properties of cathode. For this reason, high performance and durable cathode materials are required for reliable SOECs In this study, to design durable and reliable SOFCs for commercialization, we investigated degradation mechanisms under various load conditions and developed operating logics to recover the degraded cell performance. The YSZ-based cell used and tested under two electrical load condition- load trip (0.2–0 A/cm2) and load cycle (0.20–0.12 A/cm2) for 60 times (about 1,450 h). During the load trip condition, the operating voltage of cell reduced by 86 mV through the 1,443 h operation (60 load trips) with the degradation ratio of 9.1%, while the cell voltage decrease with the degradation ratio of 7.1% at 0.2 A/cm2, during the 60 load cycles. A combination of EIS and DRT, thermochemical (Gibbs equilibrium calculations), and post-mortem analysis (FE-SEM and EPMA-EDX) used to disclosed the main degradation mechanism of SOFCs under dynamic electrical load conditions. Furthermore, an operation strategy to mitigate the performance degradation under dynamic electrical loads is proposed through the identification of weak points of SOFC components. In order to improve efficiency and performance cells in the intermediate temperature, HfO2 is deposited on Ni-NDC(SDC) substrate as a electron blocking layer for ceria electrolyte using RF&DC Magnetron Sputtering system. The property of HfO2 films of ceria-based are examined by using FE-SEM and TEM. The performance and OCV of HfO2-deposited ceria-based cells improved significant compare to without HfO2 layer. Furthermore, the exchange current density and transfer coefficient which related electrocatalytic activity of anode is increased when the use of HfO2 blocking layer. As a cobalt-free cathode material, the chemical diffusion coefficient (D_chem) and surface exchange coefficient (k_chem) of Nd0.4Ba0.6Fe0.8Ni0.2O3-δ (NBFN 4682), in the SOFC and SOEC conditions. The electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) was used for analyzing D_chem and k_chem of NBFN 4682. The NBFN 4682 shows high D_chem and k_chem at reduction and oxidation atmosphere. Furthermore, the performance of YSZ-based cell with NBFN 4682 exhibited 1.03 W/cm2 at 800 ℃ under SOFC condition and 1.74 mA/cm2 under SOEC condition at 800 ℃. In addition, high operational stability NBFN 4682 was proved under constant current test of 770 mA/cm2.
