A Moderating Effect of Perceived Peer Attachment on the Relationship between Parents’ Rearing Attitude and Self-esteem among Adolescents.

The purpose of this study is to examine a moderating effect of perceived peer attachment on the relationship between parents' rearing attitude and self-esteem among adolescents. Preceding study has been reported the effect of parents’ rearing attitude on self-esteem, the relationship between parents' attachment and self-esteem, and the relationship between peer attachment and self-esteem. But it was difficult to find out moderating effect and co-relationship between these variables. For this reason, based on the related theory and prior research, this study subdivided parents' rearing attitudes into positive and negative, and analyzed the moderating effect of peer attachment on relationship between parents’ rearing attitude and self-esteem depending on the level of school (middle school and high school). The subjects of the study were forth grade panels from the ‘Korea Children's and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS)'. Panels became a middle school freshman at the time of the fourth survey, and a high school freshman at the time of the seventh survey. A total of two thousand three hundred and seventy eight (1,246 boys and 1,132 girls)’s data were used for analysis. The following research issues were established to achieve the purpose of this study : First, how do parents' rearing attitudes (positive and negative) predict their self-esteem? Second, how does the peer attachment moderate the relationship between rearing attitude and self-esteem? Third, how does the moderating effect of peer attachment differ depending on the level of school (middle school and high school)? To find out the first research problem, I first looked at the relationship between rearing attitude, peer attachment and self-esteem. The positive rearing attitude(supervision, affection, reasonable explanations) and self-esteem had a statistically significant positive correlation. The negative rearing attitude(inconsistency, over-expectation, over-interference) and self-esteem had a statistically significant negative correlation. There was also a significant positive correlation between sub-factors of peer attachment and self-esteem. The difference of correlation coefficient between positive parenting and peer attachment was significantly high in high school. The correlation coefficient between negative parenting attitude and self-esteem was higher in middle school, and the correlation coefficient between peer attachment and self-esteem was higher in high school. The second research showed that peer attachment significantly moderates between positive rearing attitude (supervision, affection, reasonable explanations) and self-esteem, both middle school and high school students. The group with greater moderating peer attachment was the students who were less aware of their parents' positive upbringing. In the case of a person with high peer attachment, it was found that the loss of self-esteem due to parental upbringing was relatively low. In addition, a study on the effectiveness of controlling peer attachment in negative rearing attitudes and self-esteem relationships showed that middle school and high school students were carefully moderated when their peer attachments were above certain values. The students who were less aware of their parents' negative upbringing were more moderated by peer attachment. The third research showed that the moderating effect of peer attachment between positive rearing and self-esteem was significantly high in middle school. Differences in negative parenting attitudes were not noted.
This study had the following implications :
First, it is meaningful that examining the moderating effect of peer attachment for each school level (middle school student, high school student). The differences in moderating effects of peer attachment will provide a basic source of insight into what kinds of programs are effective at what time to improve a child's self-esteem. In addition, it can be used to develop programs to enhance youth's self-esteem in the future based on their relationships with parents and peers. Second, revealing the effect of moderating peer attachment, it could be helpful to students who has the difficulties in controlling family and parents. It demonstrates the significance of peers to adolescents, and it is fundamental to develop programs that can be easily used to promote peer attachment among young people, especially for those who are difficult to engage at home and parents. Lastly, it is meaningful that it could provide basic information for other similar studies in the future by explaining the relationship between rearing attitude and peer attachment and self-esteem.
