The Seoul metropolitan area(SMA) is a center of high-tech industrial development, with high densities of large-scale industrial complexes, power plants, automobiles, and population. Thus, it is necessary to solve the air pollution problem. In order to do this, the South Korean government has implemented the ‘Special Act on the Improvement of Air Quality in the Seoul metropolitan area(2003)’, which includes regulations such as the basic and action plans for improvement of the air environment. However, these efforts have not seen clear results. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which is a known air pollutant, is produced by the oxidation of atmospheric nitrogen monoxide (NO). It reacts with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere, functioning as a precursor for the formation of ozone. Ozone (O3) is a secondary pollutant generated by the photochemical reaction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and VOCs in the atmosphere in the presence of ultraviolet rays. Ozone is a type of photochemical oxidant such as peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), aldehyde, and acrolein. In this study, to examine the concentration characteristics of nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2) and their effects on ozone (O3) generation in Seoul, South Korea, the concentrations of NO, NO2, and O3 were measured in the Seoul Olympic Park for approximately six weeks, from May 9 to June 12, 2016. The NO concentration was found to be highest between 6:00 and 8:00 am, the morning commuting time slot: 59.58 ppb in May and 46.62 ppb in June. High NO concentration episodes were frequently observed even during the night. The highest NO concentration in the night ranged from 41.67 ppb to 91.33 ppb. NO2 concentration showed a similar trend to NO concentration: it was high in the morning commuting time slot and in the night. The O3 concentration started to increase at 8:00 am and reached its peak between 2:00 and 4:00 pm: 111 ppb in May and 125 ppb in June. Thus, it was higher in June. Both in May and June, the O3 concentration exceeded the 100 ppb standard one-hour concentration for an air environment. Even at night, high O3 concentration episodes were frequently observed, and the highest O3 concentration ranged from 54.53 ppb to 71.85 ppb. When the correlations of NO2 and O3 concentrations between the Seoul Olympic Park and the Songpa-gu Air Pollution Monitoring Station were examined, R2 was found to be 0.981 for NO2 and 0.994 for O3, over the entire study period: a very high correlation. On comparison between the NO, NO2, and O3 concentrations on weekdays and weekends, the weekday and weekend average concentrations were found to be 9.2±15.2 ppb and 6.72±9.85 ppb for NO, 27.7±14.5 ppb and 26.7±16.4 ppb for NO2, and 42.9±26.5 ppb, and 37.9±28.3 ppb for O3 respectively. Thus, the average concentrations were higher on weekdays than on weekends. Further, the O3 concentration stayed high even after midnight, whereas the NO concentration became very low. During the study period, the wind direction was mainly southerly and the wind speed was 2m/s, and did not change much. When the NO2 and O3 concentrations during high concentration episodes at night were compared between the Gandong-gu and Gangnam-gu air pollution monitoring stations, which are near the Seoul Olympic Park, their change trends were found to be similar. Furthermore, the effects of the pollution sources appeared to also exist in the surrounding areas. A cluster analysis was conducted using the HYSPLIT4 model for the entire study period. Based on the results of a 72-hour observation at an initial altitude of 1000 m, obtained at six-hour intervals, a total of five areas (Mongol, China, Kazakhstan, the West Sea, and the East Sea) were classified in May and a total of four areas (Japan, China, the West Sea, and the South Sea) were classified in June. The areas that were most affected by pollutants were the West Sea and the East Sea. For the entire period of May, the effect of pollutants was 44% in the West Sea and 30% in the East Sea. For the entire period of June, it was 57% in the West Sea. In this study, the effects of nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2) and meteorological conditions (temperature, humidity) on O3 generation were analyzed. However, additional research is necessary to determine the effects of VOCs, fine dusts (PM10 or smaller), amount of sunshine, and season on O3 generation. A more accurate mechanism of ozone generation can be determined through further measurement and evaluation, for more efficient ozone control in the future.
