The purpose of this study was to examine effects on the cognitive and physical functions, as well as the dementia related factors of the dual-task training with cognitive tasks in elderly with dementia. The subjects were 37 elderly inpatients diagnosed with mild dementia at S Hospital located in Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. The patients were randomly divided into a dual-task training group (experimental group I; n=13), a single-task training group (experimental group II; n=12), and an aerobic exercise group (control group; n=12). These groups performed their respective exercises for a 30-minute session occurring three times a week over an eight-week period. The Korean version Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K) and the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) were used to measure the subjects’ cognitive function. Their static and dynamic balance ability, walking ability, and their ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADL) were measured in order to evaluate their overall physical function. To assess the patients’ static balance ability, their limit of stability (LOS) was measured using BioRescue. The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) were used to assess their dynamic balance abilities. The 10-Meter Walk Test (10MWT) and the 6-Minute Walking Test (6MWT) were conducted to evaluate the subjects’ walking ability. The Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL) instrument was used to measure their ability to perform ADL. Finally, to assess the subjects’ dementia related factors, their β-amyloid, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and glucose levels were measured through blood analysis. The results of the experiment were as follows: Experimental group I showed statistically significant differences between the subjects’ MMSE-K scores and their β-amyloid levels before and after the intervention, and both experimental groups I and II exhibited statistically significant differences in their members’ BBS scores before and after the intervention. Moreover, all three groups showed statistically significant differences in their TUG, 10MWT, and 6MWT scores and glucose levels before and after the intervention, whereas they exhibited no statistically significant differences in their GDS, LOS, and BADL scores and their TC, TG, LDL, and HDL levels. The present study’s overall results indicate that dual-task training with cognitive tasks is effective in improving cognitive functions and β-amyloid levels in elderly with mild dementia. In addition to dual-task training, single task training and aerobic exercise were also found to improve the dynamic balance and walking abilities, as well as blood glucose levels, in elderly patients with mild dementia, this signifies the importance of regular exercises for these patients. In other words, regular dual-task training is considered effective in improving cognitive and physical functions, as well as dementia-related factors, in elderly with mild dementia, and thus this may be suggested as an effective exercise method for the treatment and early prevention of dementia.
