Earlier studies try to find the answer to the question: “what is project success?”, “how to estimate the results of finished projects?” and “where to move for gaining the success?” And in this paper we attempt to find out the path to gain the success in software project, trying to answer the question: “Do agile methodologies really contribute to project success?”, “what obstacles effect on project success?” Obviously, it is the exception than the rule for companies to develop large software systems, within budget and according to schedule, that meet the sponsors’ requirements. Nowadays Software project management theory consists of two paradigms; the first one is a traditional software project management methodology appeared in 1970 (Waterfall methodology) and second paradigm is agile software development methodology, emerged to conform today’s business requirements and consists of 16 methodologies. In our paper we intend to make the following contribution: we intend to find out if agile software development methodologies really contribute to project success and what obstacles effect to project success, from practitioners’ perspective. We have found out next following statements: firstly, adoption of agile software development methodologies will increase the probability of project success. Secondly, lack of budget is negatively associated with project success. Thirdly, lack of user involvement is negatively associated with project success.
