이때 물-이득 보정과 강건한 물-이득 보정은 물 보정방법에 비해 SNR (Signal to noise ratio)과 CNR (Contrast to noise ratio)이 33 ~ 57% 개선되었다.

Photon-counting detector (PCD) is one of the leading candidates for the next generation X-ray detector. The PCD enables effective multiple material decomposition and ultra-low dose computed tomography (CT) imaging, but several correction techniques to compensate non-ideal effects of the PCD should be preceded to maximize the imaging performance. In this study, I present experimental results of water phantom based flat field correction methods to reduce energy distortion for photon-counting spectral CT images. The performance of the flat field correction methods using single and multiple water phantoms is compared, and the robustness of the correction methods for various imaging tasks is examined. Then, image-based material decomposition and image optimization are conducted using images calibrated by water phantoms. The effects of energy difference of combining images and linear combination coefficient are confirmed. In a conventional water correction method, the water phantom of similar size to the measured object is scanned, and then subtracted from the measure projection data. Although this method reduces the ring artifacts caused by energy distortion, noise in the final image increases due to the noise in the water phantom. To reduce it, a water-gain correction method is proposed. An average gain is provided to reduce the energy distortion of each detector pixel without increasing the noise. In particular, this method is useful for systems where the characteristics of some pixels change over time due to high leakage current. The short calibration process further improves the correction accuracy. While the water-gain correction method would be simple and effective, when the size and location of the object vary, residual artifacts can be introduced since the detector gains are optimized only for a centered water phantom. To reduce the sensitivity of each detector pixel response for different object path lengths, a robust water-gain correction method is conducted using multiple water phantoms. The dynamic range of detector pixel gain is increased by higher order polynomial fitting. The results show that the water phantom based flat field correction methods reduce the ring artifacts for a centered object. It is also observed that both water-gain correction method and robust water-gain correction method provide improved signal to noise ratio (SNR) and contrast to noise ratio (CNR) by 33 ˜ 57% compared to the water correction method. And the robust water-gain correction method with increased dynamic range reduces ring artifacts effectively regardless of the size and location of the object. In this experiment, the final image optimized with the image-based linear combination improves SNR by 20% and CNR by 14% compared to the original image.
