Psychoanalytic Considerations on the Movie 'Eternal Sunshine' : Focused on Analysis of Joel and Clementine원문보기

This research uses psychoanalytic approach to understand the unconscious dynamics of both Joel and Clementine who repeatedly fall in love, break-up and re-unite with each other despite their memories of the relationship erased. The break-ups and reunions of Joel and Clementine depicts a typical relationship and relational conflicts between two individuals with different personality traits. The persistent attraction between the two despite the memory deletion may appear romantic however, there are things that cannot be fully comprehended with the ostensible reasonings offered in the story. Therefore, the following study attempts to analyze the relational pattern of Joel and Clementine to reveal what are the unconscious dynamics underneath their attractions to each other and to study their personality traits using the theories of Freud, Klein, and Winnicott. Upon the deletion of their memories, the movie takes the audience for a time travel to the periods when Joel and Clementine were together and also to Joel’s childhood to reveal the underlying causes of their repetitive behavioural patterns. The study attempts to analyze, using Bion’s theories, the meaning of symbols of in their memories in various perspectives to investigate how the recalled memories affect both Joel and Clementine in unconscious level and how that leads to transformations in their individual lives as well as in their relationship. In conclusion, the repetitive behaviours of Joel and Clementine are due to the deprivation and non-facilitating as well as dysfunctional environment that exposed both to the traumas that were later repressed. In addition, their repetitive attraction to each other that conspired the specific transference between the two was an attempt to remember their traumas from their infancy and to re-experience the pains attached to reenactment so that they can work to attend to their psychological injuries. The decision to erase their memories of each other comes as a shock to both. Nevertheless, the realization of their decision presents an opportunity for both to confront the emotional truth that they had been repressed in their unconscious and fully experience them. To both Joel and Clementine, it is a chance to evolve and thus, strengthen their ego in order to pursue the truth of their lives and such motive is driven by the truth drive. The research focuses on unveiling the purpose of Joel and Clementine’s repetitive behaviours that cause great agony in their relationship. The unconscious intent of their repetition lies in the process of growth achieved in both of their egos from their defective forms developed due to their traumatic experiences during their infancy. Although the study offers an insight of the purpose of repetitive behaviour that it is an attempt driven by truth drive to overcome the infant traumas by re-experiencing the pains arise from the intimate relationship, it is undeniable that the limitation of the study lies on its examinations on a fiction, not a real clinical case. Thus, the future research may further validate the claims of the current study by investigating the repetitive behaviours observed in an actual clinical case relationship.
