The purpose of this study is to develop a video image retrieval program for Korean teachers that can be used in the preparation of materials when using Hallyu image content.
The number of foreigners who enjoy hallyu has increased rapidly in recent years. As a result, the number of Korean learners who are interested in enjoying hallyu is increasing. Their Korean language learning, which started from interest in Korean-style content and Korean stars, develops toward a deeper understanding of Korean culture owing to the desire to fully enjoy drama and K-POP.
Recently, there are various ways to utilize the hallyu contents in class in the field of Korean language education. Various researches have been conducted in the areas and methods such as presenting selection criteria for hallyu content suitable for Korean education, presenting a teaching model using specific hallyu contents, and verifying the effect of applying hallyu content for each language area. This study investigated the process of modification the hallyu contents into class material in the Korean language education and searched for ways to improve the efficiency of this process. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program that can search images by Korean text content and text search.
Literature research is divided into discussion of Korean language education using Hallyu and prior studies on image retrieval system. First, this study reviewed studies presenting Korean language teaching methods using hallyu contents and discussing the general application direction of them. In addition, it reviewed the current status of Korean teachers' preparation of multimedia materials, problems, and ways to improve them. Finally, the previous researches on the image retrieval system in the field of information communication are reviewed and technical methods applicable to this program development are considered.
Next, the ADDIE model and educational software development process were reviewed to define the program development procedure of this study. The five procedure steps of planning, design, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination are decided and the details are (1) Requirements analysis (2) Development direction setting (3) Program composition presentation (4) Programming (5) User’s guide presentation (6)prototype program evaluation (7) revision and supplementation (8) proposal of supply plan.
In order to derive program evaluation criterion, the definitions and categories of educational software are examined, and based on the evaluation criteria of educational software for data presentation to which development program belongs. It was difficult to find the previous study related to program development in Korean language education. Therefore, it was investigated whether education software development of Ministry of Education was applicable to this study.
Through the questionnaire survey, 42 Korean teachers who taught Korean language in Korea and abroad surveyed the contents of preparation and utilization of hallyu contents and expectation of development program and reflected this in the program development direction.
The program was developed with a two-tier structure of the user screen and database. The subtitle file of the drama provided on YouTube was used as database input data and the user screen was implemented as Excel. The user screen is designed to show syllable unit word search function, combining two search words function, and image search function. Through this, the teacher can view the caption information according to the search term and access the corresponding image through the video URL corresponding to the caption information. After programming, a manual that details how to use the program was made.
Six Korean teachers assessed the prototype program implemented in the first place, and the derived improvement requirements were evaluated and linked to the program supplement. this study finalized the procedure of implementing the image retrieval program by presenting the way of supplying the developed program.
In the evaluation process, it was found that public interest and plans were needed to cope with copyright problems and to share programs.
The image retrieval program proposed in this study is expected to make it possible to prepare more efficient class materials by shortening the time for Korean teachers to search the hallyu visual content as class materials. Through this it is expected that the application of hallyu content will be more active in the field of Korean language education.
