In this paper, a PWM/BM dual mode DC-DC boost converter is proposed. In general Pulse-Width-Modulation (PWM) converters, there is a problem that the efficiency is greatly reduced due to switching loss in light load condition. The proposed dual mode boost converter generally operates in PWM mode and when the load current is reduced to light load condition, it operates in Burst-Mode (BM), a sort of Pulse-Frequency-Modulation (PFM). Through the dual mode operation, we achieve 13-% increase in converter efficiency at 10-mA load current condition compared with conventional PWM boost converter. In addition, the proposed boost converter uses the current-mode control method which provides several advantages over the voltage-mode control such as easier frequency compensation and automatic Over-Current-Protection (OCP). The proposed boost converter has been fabricated in a 180nm BCDMOS process and has a 3-V input voltage and an output voltage range of 3.5-V to 5-V. Also, it has an output current range of less than 500-mA. Proposed boost converter has a switching frequency of 1-MHz and an output voltage ripple of less than 30-mV when operated in PWM. The peak efficiency is 96%.
