Ionic electroactive polymer (IEAP) actuators driven by electrical stimuli have been widely investigated for use in practical applications such as sensors, and biomedical devices. The ionic polymer metal composistes (IPMCs) have sandwich structure with metal electrode layers and ionic polymer. However, conventional IPMCs have a serious drawback of poor durability under long-term actuation in open air, mainly because of the water molecules and hydrated cations through cracks in the metallic electrodes. Therefore, it is important to eliminate or minimize the micro-cracks of the electrode surfaces and prevent the leak charges at the interface. We herein report the study on electrodes and interfaces of IPMCs actuators based low-demensional materials. Advantages of the carbonaceous electrodes can solve the problems of metallic electrodes owing to their low manufacturing cost, shorten processing time and flexibility, excellent electrical property. In this study, we fabricated graphene-based electrodes (2-D materials) and carbon nanocomposite electrodes (1-D materials), which have high electrical conductivity and can be fabricated by a simple method without cracking the electrode surface. In addition, by inserting the h-BN insulating layers (2-D materials) between the ionic polymer membrane and the electrodes, the electric field effect and the actuation performance of the actuator are improved, and the durability of the actuator according to the oxidation prevention of the electrode is also improved.
