A Study on the Shapes and Functions of Mosques
Hwang Inhye Department of Arabic studies Graduate School, Myongji University Directed by Professor Song Kyungkeun
This study inquired into the shapes and functions of mosques observed in the Quran, the central religious text of Islam and Hadith, record of the traditions or sayings of the Prophet Muhammad as well as the opinions of Four Sunni Schools of Islam regarding the shapes and functions of mosques. Besides, this study intended to examine the changes from the perspective of time and space of the shapes of mosques, to figure out how mosques have gone through changes of shapes throughout the ages in the history, and how the shapes of mosques, established in diverse regions, have been modified by the influences of the local environment, climate and cultural features along with the expansion of Islam. Moreover, this study intended to understand the roles and functions of mosques, which are currently on the rise in different parts of the world including our country South Korea and Europe, by inquiring into the subject from religious, educational, social and political perspectives. As for the research method, this study collected and analyzed various literatures and theses related to the roles, functions and shapes of mosques. In addition to them, this study included overseas theses, papers, news and statistical materials obtained from Internet for a deeper analysis. As a place of worship for Muslims, a mosque is important for practicing their religious life and plays a crucial part in everyday life. The basic form of an Islamic mosque can be found from Medina mosque with the simple rectangle form known as “the Prophet’s Mosque” built when the Islamic Prophet Muhammad was moving from Mecca to Medina. The fact that Muhammad built the mosque first right after establishing the Islamic community “Ummah” surely demonstrates the importance of mosques. Mosques were established in the center of the city when Islam started the conquest war and formed military cities, and the shapes have been gone through changes throughout different ages. The first Dynasty of Islam, the Umayyad Dynasty introduced the arches and domes to mosques, influenced by the construction styles of the ancient Rome and then the Byzantine Empire. The architecture of the Abbasid Caliphate, the golden age of Islam, is characterized by domes, semicircle arches and spiral towers influenced by Persia. The Fatimid Caliphate greatly contributed to educational progress of mosques, by establishing a school “Madrasa” in Al-Azhar Mosque of Egypt. Moreover, there was further development of domes during the Ottoman Empire and they are characterized by the placement of one big central dome and many domes of different sizes in the mosque. The mosques of the Ottoman Empire formed a mosque complex providing convenience of life by installing many ancillary buildings such as restaurants, lodging, stores, schools, hospitals and bathing facilities around the mosques. Moreover, mosques went through many different forms of changes influenced by the environment, climate and culture of the conquered regions in the course of expanding and spreading Islam to other areas. In sub-Saharan West Africa, the main construction materials were based on soil and wood. They used bricks made of hardened mud for the wooden structure. This way, they achieved construction convergence between the indigenous tradition and Islamic architecture. In the mosques of East Africa, they used materials which are easily achievable around the area such as coral and mangrove pillars. Thus, in the indigenous tradition, the features of style of mosques and Islamic rules were interpreted. In Anatolia, they used flat roofs made of stones or bricks equivalent to the form in the Byzantine Church or a cube-type structure form of a single dome. Later, they showed different forms such as combination between a dome and an iwan, mixture between bricks and glazed tiles and domes and various arches. In Persia, iwan, the open hall of worship composed of four arches and domes, which were frequently used in the temples and homes, was applied for mosques and later became a typical form of Iranian mosques. In the Indian subcontinent, there were many Hindu temples established in stones prior to the Islamic age. When Islam was distributed in India, the elements of mosques such as burnt bricks, glazed tiles, pointed arches, cupolas and domes were introduced in India. These elements created a new shape of mosques in India by the combination of native Hinduism and the Islamic style. In Southeast Asia, they utilized wood to cover the mosques not with domes but with multi-story ceilings. The mosques of China were mixed with the traditional construction style of the country. Many middle doors divide numerous courtyards and the hall of worship is located in the innermost area. The mosques built in Europe and America present various forms. Sometimes they include domes or minarets, which symbolize the mosques, and other times they just exclude them. In addition, there are also cases of reinterpreting the meaning of mosques to reproduce them as buildings with the modern and simple form. Nonetheless, domes and minarets are the indisputable symbols of Islamic mosques. On the other hand, the roles and functions of mosques in the Islamic history are closely related to the leader’s role of Muhammad, the last Prophet of Islam. He played a role not only as a religious leader but also as a leader in all areas of Islamic communities. It was possible that mosques provided necessary stages in order for him to play such roles. The early stage of Islam did not have the present state system without any organization and system. Therefore, Muhammad used mosques with the purpose of forming the system of Islamic communities in addition to religious rituals. Through mosques, it was possible to enact and enforce laws. Also, mosques made it possible to plan, decide and carry out political and diplomatic issues. Besides, military expeditions were also organized and conducted in mosques. The information practiced in the Islamic communities was directly delivered through Khutbah of the joint worship of Friday. Moreover, mosques served not only as places of encounter among delegations, envoys and tribe representatives, but also as spaces for making political negotiations and treaties as well as judging and arbitrating disputes. Regarding the roles of Muhammad as a leader, mosques became places to play a variety of political, social and legal roles and functions. As the Islamic world expanded and developed, mosques were required by the society to play more roles and functions. Today, Muslims live not only in Islamic countries but also in non-Islamic ones. They recover their religious identity through mosques. At the same time, they regard mosques as a tool for sharing and preserving their social and cultural identity. In mosques, the immigrant Muslims receive help to adapt themselves to the new society for efficient settlement. Also, they deal with their homesickness through conversation and counseling organized by gatherings of Muslim communities inside the mosques. He multifarious functions and roles of mosques give influences on the general aspects of Muslims even today. The teachings imparted in the mosques greatly influence the formation of values and the view of the world of Muslims as well.
