Objectives : This study set out to investigate the effects of a group music therapy program on the stress coping, positive psychology, problematic behavior, and school adjustment of middle school students with problematic smartphone use and examine its applicability as part of preventive measures and functional training to address problems with smartphone use.
Methods : The subjects include 28 students with problematic smartphone use sampled from 120 seventh, eighth, and ninth graders at M Middle School in J-gun including high risk users that scored total 45 points or more in the self-diagnosis inventory for the observation of smartphone addiction among adolescents and thus showed a high addiction tendency and potential risk users that scored 42~44 points. All of the students and their parents gave consent to participate in the research program. The subjects were randomly assigned to the experiment group of 14 and the control of 14 and participated in the program. While the experiment group received group music therapy in total 16 sessions with a 70-minute session per week, the control group received no treatment. The study analyzed 25 students that succeeded in implementing the program to the end. They were analyzed in sociodemographic characteristics, stress coping, positive psychology, self-behavior assessment, and school adjustment inventories. The study then examined differences between the groups, differences between the points of measurement, and effect size of interactions between the groups and points of measurement.
Results : The findings were as follows: First, the study tested the experiment and control group in terms of homogeneity before experimentation and found no significant differences between the groups in the coping method scale, scale for adolescents' self-behavior evaluation, school adjustment scale, and positive psychology scale as well as their subareas. Second, music therapy caused a significant increase to the active coping behavior and a significant decrease to the passive coping behavior of the experiment group compared to the control group. Third, music therapy caused a significant increase to passion, a subfactor of positive psychology, among the members of the experiment group compared to the control group. Fourth, music therapy caused a significant decrease in the problematic behavior of internalization and externalization in the experiment group on the self-behavior evaluation scale compared to the control group. Finally, music therapy caused a significant increase in adjustment to school environment, a subfactor of school adjustment, among the members of the experiment group compared to the control group.
Conclusions : The findings show that group music therapy increased active coping to the stress of problematic smartphone use, decreased passive coping, promoted passion, caused a significant decrease in the problematic behavior of internalization and externalization, and enhanced school adjustment. Group music therapy will be useful as a mental and social intervention for students with problematic smartphone use.
