Global efforts to reduce GHG emissions have been steadily progressing. In Korea, we set a target of 32.5% reduction of BAU by 2030. Since the amendment of the 2030 Greenhouse Gas Reduction Roadmap and the finalization of the emission allocation plan for 2018-2020 was established in July 2018. The construction industry needs cement reduction efforts. The amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the production of 1 ton of cement is about 0.84 tons. Portland cement (OPC) accounts for about 6% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Korea. Ferronickel slag is a by-product generated during melting and refining in a ferronickel smelting process. As domestic ferronickel production system has been established, more than 2 million tons per year of ferronickel slag is generated annually, resulting in the environmental problems caused by ferroalloy slag fields and landfill. Although commercialization and research of such ferronickel slag in the form of fine aggregate has been actively carried out, research for using it as a substitute for cement has been limited. This study was conducted to increase the recycling rate of ferronickel slag and to evaluate the feasibility of ferronickel slag powder as a substitute for cement. For this purpose, the experiment was divided into three series. Series I was tested by mixing 0, 5, 10, 15, 20% of ferronickel slag powder with respect to the amount of unit cement. Series II was tested for comparison and evaluation between ferronickel slag powder and mortar mixture blast furnace slag fine powder and fly ash. Series III analyzed the characteristics of three component mortar mixed with ferronickel slag powder. As a result of the experiment, the mortar containing the ferronickel slag powder showed the effect of reducing the hydration heat, improving the fluidity and reducing the drying shrinkage. Therefore, it would be advantageous to apply it to mass concrete and offshore structures. The compressive strength of the mortar using the ferronickel slag powder was relatively low. However, the ternary mortar containing the blast furnace slag powder and the fly ash showed similar strength properties to the conventional ternary cement admixture. Therefore, it is considered appropriate to use it as a ternary admixture material rather than using ferronickel slag powder alone.
