A study on the relationship between income, energy consumption and environmental pollution : the case of Vietnam원문보기

In recent decades, the word is facing challenges to find a solution to make a balance sustainable economic development and environmental damage. The strong development of Asia-Pacific economies really results in environmental pollution, ecosystem degradation and exhausting natural resources. In addition, climate change is also deeply affecting food security, global social and economic development. Many theories have been employed to study and assess the relationship between the environment and economic growth. Among of them, Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) theory is found to be the best theory to describe the relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation, in which the environment will become better when the economy grows highly. Economic development is one of the top priorities not only in developed countries, but also in developing countries like Vietnam. Since the implementation of the renovation process, Vietnam has made great efforts in the process of market reform and economic growth. Vietnam has been in transition from a centrally-planned to a 'socialist oriented market economy' since the change economic reforms was introduced in 1986. In early 1990s, liberalization measures resulted in rapidly expanding exports and high economic growth, with real GDP growth averaging 9% per year. It was slower in late 1990s but Vietnam is still one of the fastest growing emerging economies in Asia; averaging around 7.1% annual GDP growth from 2006 to 2009, 6.8% in 2010 and 6.67% in 2015. However, rapid economic growth is usually accompanied by increased energy consumption and many cause unexpected effects on energy resources and the environment. Although Vietnam has been obtained certain progress in economic development, the economy's quality, productivity, efficiency and competitiveness are still low. Material and energy consumption is still high. Especially, the exploitation and use of natural resources are not very reasonable and not economical. Another drawback is that the issue of energy use and CO2 emissions in Vietnam in relation to economic growth has not been properly considered. The study examines the dynamic relationships between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, trade openness and economic growth for Vietnam in the period from 1986 to 2015 based on Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) approach Johansen co-integration, Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) bound testing for a long-run relationship among the series; and the error correction mechanism for the short-run dynamics. The EKC relationship posits that as economy grows, measured by per capita income, at the initial stage energy pollutants increase; but starts falling after a certain threshold income has been achieved. The postulated relation produces an inverted U-curve and has been empirically verified for many nations. The results confirm co-integration among economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness and CO2 emissions. The results of this study do not clearly show the existence of an EKC for Vietnam. However, it is estimated that a further economic growth will result in an inverted U-curve. The causality results support the argument that economic growth exerts a causal influence on growth of energy use and growth of pollution in the long-run. The results also point to an uni-directional causality running from economic growth to growth of energy use in the short-run.
