Estimation Method of Submarine Cable Burial Depth using CBRA

Submarine cable plays an important role in the supply of power between land and Jeju, but it has suffered three damages since its construction in 1998, and the cost of repairing submarine cable has reached several billion won. The causes of damage to the submarine cables are the piles installed in farms, trawlers and anchoring carried out in areas other than the marina. The submarine cables’ damaged probabilities are 48% (ICPC, 2008) and 69% (CIGRE, 2009), suggesting that the damage caused by the anchoring is the main cause. Therefore, the method for protecting the submarine cables from the anchoring is becoming a major concern, and international research is underway. There are various protection methods such as burial, ductile protection method, stiffness protection method (A-duct) and main steel pipe. Among them, burial is the most economical and stable method. It is important to estimate the burial depth with the economical and stability because construction costs differs greatly according to the burial depth of cables. There are few method for determine the depth of submarine cables, one of them is BPI, which estimates penetration depth by evaluating fishing gear and anchor of ship in three levels, another is NCEL chart. However, these efforts have semi-quantitative limitations that rely on empirical factors. Therefore, this study investigated CBRA which estimates burial depth statistically and quantitatively considering the submarine environment of the target area and the frequency of the ship's navigation. CBRA is a technique to estimate the minimum burial depth (DoL) per return period through the cable accident probability. It is most important to accurately calculate the depth of threat of the ship anchor among various factors determining burial depth. CBRA also presented the threat depth of ship anchor, but there was a limit due to lack of literature basis. Therefore, this study further investigated the maximum penetration depth of ship anchors and calculated the penetration depth of clay and sand seabed by Excel VBA modeling. Numerical results of maximum penetration depth and ultimate holding power were compared with Vryhof data and NCEL, and the errors are respectively 10% and 20%. these errors. These errors were found to be relatively good considering that the complex shape of an anchor is a model simulating a rectangle. In this study, we selected virtual submarine cable section in Jindo - Jeju sea and the submarine geological map of Korea Geological Resources Institute and water depth data of Korea Ocean Development, and Traffic frequency and accident probability of Marine Traffic were applied to CBRA model. As a result of estimating the minimum depth of burial through CBRA model, a minimum of 0.6m to a maximum of 0.74m at 2500 years return period, and a minimum of 0.6m to 1.40m at 25000 years return period. The model of CBRA has the greatest influence on the seabed condition, water depth, weight distribution and accident probability of navigation ships, and if the conditions are applied correctly, reliable minimum burial depth can be obtained.
