This study was conducted utilizing plant which is a various healing factor of the forest. Plant therapy tried to prove that have an effect to college students who exposed in stress by the change of new environment on the decrease of college life stress, increase in positive emotions, and decrease in negative emotions. In late March, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year students in the department of forestry at Chungbuk National University completed a questionnaire before attending an outside class at a school in Cheongju, and moved to Woraksan Research Forest to experience plant therapy programs and then responded to the questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using a pared t-test to test the effects of applying for the plant therapy program. As a result, the change in school life stress decreased by 0.12 from 2.42 to 2.30 on average but was not statistically significant(p<.05).
However the percentage of students who checked ‘Moderately’ has dropped by 14.3% for ‘I am annoyed by having to take tests too often’ and 9.1% for ‘I have too much to worry about besides studying at university’ and ‘I am worried about not knowing how to study effectively’ respectively.
The average score of positive emotions showed a meaningful increase from 3.05 to 3.24 (p<.000). Of the positive emotions, ‘interested’, ‘strong’, ‘proud’ and ‘attentive’ showed a remarkable increase; ‘interested’(‘Extremely’ by 27.3%), ‘strong’(‘Quite a Bit’ by 18.2%), ‘proud’(‘Quite a Bit’ by 13%) and ‘attentive’(‘Quite a Bit’ by 13%). Also the average of negative emotions demonstrated a significant decrease from 2.40 to 2.12 (p<.000). Of the negative emotions, ‘Guilty’, ‘Ashamed’, ‘Afraid’, ‘Nervous’, ‘Upset’ and ‘Jittery’ showed a remarkable decrease; ‘Guilty’(‘Moderately’ by 15.6%), ‘Ashamed’ and ‘Afraid’(‘Moderately’ by 11.7% each), ‘Nervous’(‘Quite a Bit’ by 6.5%) and ‘Upset’ and ‘Jittery’(‘Quite a Bit’ by 5.2% each). Plant therapy, which spends time observing plants and waking up five senses in the forest, proved suitable for college students to improve emotional stability, life-respect, personality, and sensibility.
