There is graffiti art as a cultural medium in modern society where various cultural media coexist and communicate. Graffiti art is recognized as a genre of art, not just street art. As graffiti art, which was recognized as subculture, communicated with the public, the existing recognition and artistic evaluation began to change. We feel the necessity of more careful research when seeing that graffiti art is widely applied to various fields in a modernized urban space.
The purpose of this study is to establish the direction of analysis for the urban cultural influence of graffiti art in the East and West through theoretical review and analyze the social role, the cultural influence, and the artistic value of graffiti art as an element of urban cultural character based on the direction. The scope of the study is limited to the United States where graffiti art was developed and Korea, China, Japan in Asia and Germany, the U.K. where graffiti art is artfully evaluated and actively promoted.
The methods of this study are as follows: First, the concept, its background and status of graffiti art are summarized and artistic classification and characteristics are derived. Second, the urban cultural character of graffiti art is studied. Third, the framework for analyzing the urban cultural character of graffiti art is derived from the social role, cultural influence, and artistic value and is set as an element of the analysis. Fourth, the research analysis of selected East and West graffiti art is carried out. Finally, we draw conclusions about how the cultural characteristics of the Eastern and Western graffiti art affects the urban cultural characteristics through the analyzed contents.
In graffiti art, the U.S. shows cultural characteristics combined with hip-hop culture and the public, and acquires the publicness of graffiti with a free American hybrid culture as a communicative value characteristic. It can be seen that Germany breaks the existing framework with graffiti art that sublimated the hatred and anger caused by war and history of division into freedom and peace and restructures into urban culture with symbolic and formative graffiti art. The U.K. uses a sign that satirizes resistance to society to reinterpret it as modern art. It is characterized by freely ejecting the inner world of the human being and sharing with the public with the communicative value of social culture. In the Eastern graffiti art, Korea has the prejudice that it looks like scribbles and gives an abstruse feeling, but it provides a culture and art space by configuration with features and themes of the city. China pursues the spatialization of art around the European culture and is characterized by symbolic artistry intended with symbolization containing Chinese national character. It can be seen that Japan is characterized by symbolic expression with socio-cultural homogeneity in the expression given by concise, simple and traditional colors.
The results of this study suggest that the U.S, Germany and the U.K. in the West have an ideological consciousness of resistance and division in the graffiti art culture. Publicness was found to be the highest as the effect of graffiti art on the city. The graffiti of Korea, China, and Japan in the East flowed in the spiritual product of young people, and symbolicization was found to be the highest as the effect of graffiti art on the city through the expressive action that combined country’s unique beauty.
As art that visualizes social emotions and messages communicating with the public, communicates with the public, and affects the urban environment aesthetically, graffiti art sublimates the inner desires of humans as free expression art to create consensus with the public. Therefore, public interest is expected further so that graffiti art has become a higher level of popular culture art with the value of urban and cultural art and allowable range for limited venues and value standards recognized as art can be raised and changed. Based on the results derived from the research on the effect of graffiti art on the city, this study suggests that it will be a study material for the development of another field of graffiti art.
