The purpose of this study is to examine the significance and the meaning of architecturalism in contemporary society by looking at the deconstructive and digital architecture which are important flows of contemporary architecture. To this end, I focused on Jaha Hadid, a great figure of deconstructive/digital architecture. I analyzed her buildings chronologically and examined the boundary deconstructive architecture makes with digital architecture.
The boundary in this study represents contact point and discrimination, which are also terms for conflict and harmony. A boundary is the point where two or more beings meet. Therefore, this study attempted to reveal the boundary between structural and deconstructive architecture and the boundary between deconstructive and digital architecture. From the architecture of Jaha Hadid, I extracted 10 boundary elements such as straightening, diagonalization, fragmentation, decentralization, acute angle making, ambiguity of the boundary, hypertext, streamlined form, non-linearity and computing technology; and I analyzed and derived points from her transition from deconstructive to digital architecture with three symbolic, cognitive, and spatial boundaries. In addition, the aforementioned 10 boundary elements and three boundaries were applied to twenty-four Jaha Hadid buildings and I made individual tables for the buildings.
Through this process, this study could prove that digital architecture does not derive the same process and results of deconstructive architecture, although it exists on the extension line of deconstructive architecture. Digital architecture has clearly inherited a deconstructive point of view. However, digital architecture was not simply distinguished by methodological differences. Digital architecture was not simply a more elaborate implementation of the form that deconstructivism architects had dreamed of. As architectural design methodology is changed, both architectural concept and form had to be changed.
Previously, architectural design was a symbolic notation of conceived ideas. In architectural drawings or computer screen, there were buildings or numerical values that the idea has briefly drawn. Architectural design therefore remained in the role of translating the created thoughts. But digital architecture was not like that. A digital architectural design software was not just a simple tool to transcribe ideas. Architects who lead digital architecture conceptualized and experimented ideas within the software and redesign the design. They tied up or folded the building mass through the architectural design software and stretched sideways like ink dropped on the surface of the water.
The completed digital architectural design in this way, however, has developed to connote mobility from the present to the future, composed of senses and nuances rather than logic, as the former deconstructive architecture made it feel like an ideal language built on sophisticated logic.
These changes are not exceptional for Jaha Hadid, so her buildings described in this study showed relatively regular characteristics in conformity with each architectural style when they are different from the deconstructive and digital architectural methodologies.
In addition, this study intended to reveal that the transition to digital architecture is not the result of some chance and a faint feeling, but a willingness to realize social needs and environmental changes.
