Recently, Research and development of SBW (Steer-by-Wire) as the next generation steering system is active. SBW has various advantages such as quick reactivity compared with conventional steering system, vibration from road surface to driver is separated, and steering feeling is improved. Furthermore, as autonomous driving technology develops, there’ll be no need for steering by the driver, and as the concept of driver disappears after reaching the autonomous driving skill leve 5, (SAE standard), there will be no steering wheel. Therefore, it is expected that the development of SBW will become more important as the autonomous driving technology develops. However, SBW is physically completely separate from the steering wheel and rack & pinion because there is no column, unlike conventional steering systems. Because of this, the SBW is more vulnerable to the hazards of fault in electronic control systems than the conventional steering systems. Therefore, in order to secure safety in terms of functional safety, the system should be configured with redundancy. Hardware redundancy through a plurality of hardware has high reliability but has disadvantages in terms of cost. Therefore, in this paper, we tried to deal with fault of electronic control system of SBW through software redundancy through vehicle model and in-vehicle sensor. The basic SBW control is implemented by feedforward controller to compensate mechanical friction and PI feedback controller using the error that is difference between the target steering angle and the pinion angle sensor. Model-based redundancy theory, which is a typical theory of software redundancy theory, is a theory to detect fault by analyzing residual that is difference between the actual hardware output and model-based observer output. Therefore, model accuracy is very important. However, SBW hardware is very complicated and difficult to modeling because of nonlinear factors such as disturbance from the road surface and mechanical friction. Therefore, in this paper, we diagnosed faults of SBW using vehicle model. To generate residual, yaw rate and target steering angle were used. and if the residual exceeds a certain threshold value, it is diagnosed as a fault of the SBW. The faults were classified into motor faults and faults of the pinion angle sensor. If diagnosed as a motor fault, it is inevitable to replace it with another motor. However, in the case of a fault of the pinion angle sensor, the pinion angle value can be estimated using the Kalman filter using the yaw rate and vehicle speed information. Thus, in case of sensor fault controller replace the sensor value where the fault occurred with the estimated angle value. However, since the estimated angle value has a time delay compared to the actual value, Chattering occurs in angle position control. Therefore, in case of the angle sensor fault, the phase-lead compensator is added to compensate the time delay of the estimated value. by Fault-Tolerant Control, the control performance is maintained even in the case of the fault occurrence. faults must be artificially injected because they can not wait to occur naturally, and such a Fault Injection Test is very dangerous to verify at the vehicle test. Thus, SBW Fault-Diagnosis and Fault-Tolerant control algorithms are verified under LKS(Lane-Keeping System) operation status and in HiLS (Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation) environment.
