The purpose of this research is to propose a synonyms learning program that is applicable in Korean classroom environment.
There are native Korean, sino-Korean and foreign words in Korean vocabulary system. Synonyms of native Korean and sino-Korean account for more than half of synonyms. In this research I tried to find some effective methods of teaching the synonyms of native Korean and sino-Korean.
In the first chapter, this study shows the purpose of the study, and it introduces the method that the study is being carried out. In addition, it is divided into the study of synonyms from Korean linguistics and the study of them from Korean language education to examine how academia study about synonyms has been consisted of all the while. Furthermore, it subdivides the field of teaching Korean into the study of synonyms' meaning difference and the teaching method of synonyms.
In the second chapter, I discussed the concept and classification of synonyms on the basis of existing research. And also, the study examines each types of synonyms' meaning difference that has been discussed before, and then using all of them, selects adequate 2 types to this study.
In the third chapter, the study makes a vocabulary list by putting three kinds of universities textbooks, and Jo Nam Ho(2003) together, and then specifies them to beginning level, intermediate level, and advanced level synonyms by the list of synonyms offered by Kim Gwang Hea(2000).
In the forth chapter, the study analyses the meaning difference of synonyms pair using selected types and the method of substitution verification. Moreover, the study shows the common semantic of synonyms pair, discrimination semantic, and discrimination type making a meaning difference, and example sentences. As a result of them, it makes teachers can use them at the field of education by using the analyzed meaning results of synonym pairs based on contents that are analyzed until now.
In the fifth chapter, For effective education based on the situation, this study presents a specific synonym education model using different meaning and phrases for beginners and intermediate students.
In the last chapter, the study summarizes the contents that are discussed above and suggests the limitation and future directions in this study.
This research explains the necessity of synonym teaching, then systematically illustrates the theory and recent developments of synonyms. Furthermore, there is a list of necessary synonyms organized for Korean Language learners in this study. Based on that, this study is also established an appropriate teaching method.
