Online communities (OCs) are the popular social environments in which people interact by sharing resources such as information, advice, and thoughts on their mutual interests. Existing research lacks an explanation of the reasons of participation behavior in OCs such as login to the community, share, comment, like, and posting opinions on main issues in the message board, which create discussions and how such voluntary behaviors provide members with perceived benefits (utilitarian, social, and hedonic benefits). This study adopts social exchange theory (SET) to observe how SET related construct (perceived members’ support) affects online community participation behavior (OCPB), as well as bring utilitarian, hedonic, and social benefits to its participants. This study also examines moderating effects of exchange ideology and perceived ties in participation behavior in OCs.
A structured questionnaire incorporating variables identified in the literature is used as a survey instrument for the study. A paper based on an online survey, where 305 respondents were valid. A five-factor measurement model is tested for reliability and validity by confirmatory factor analysis. With acceptable reliability and validity of the measurement model, a structural equation modeling is performed to determine the contributions of factors to the participation behavior in OCs. Both measurement and structural model shows a superior model fit to explain research purposes.
The results highlight the significant effects of perceived members’ support on OCPB. Participation behavior in OCs has critical effect on perceived benefits. The results also identify the moderating effects of exchange ideology and perceived ties, where perceived tie was insignificant. The findings from this study bridge the literature gaps in the context of OCPB by demonstrating how practitioners and OC managers can enhance perceived members’ support, which result in OCPB, thus providing the OC users with several perceived benefits.
