Vocabulary is the most essential and fundamental of communication, and is the beginning of language acquisition. Communication can be successfully achieved by identifying the meaning of a word and using it properly.
Korean language learners for academic purposes not only improve their Korean language skills, but also have the special purpose of going to domestic universities and performing their academic work. Academic communication, however, is distinct from the general one, and thus requires separate language skills. Vocabulary, especially in academic languages, is the most difficult area for learners and the biggest obstacle to their academic work because they are very different from the general situation. Because there are many differences in meaning or usage from the Korean language for general purpose, it is the most difficult factor for foreign students to study and the most necessary field for learning. Therefore, it is necessary to educate the major vocabulary to solve the difficulties and satisfy the needs for the successful and effective academic performance of the learner.
Recently, Korean language education has been selecting major lexicon for various majors, but there are still insufficient studies on the subject of the majors. In response, this study was conducted to select the basic major vocabulary in the field of Biology, which is considered to be of increasing interest but which is considered to have little research compared to other field’s, and to propose teaching and learning methods that are applied with the content-based Instructions (CBI) as an effective means of vocabulary education for Korean language learners for academic purposes.
The contents of the discussion are as follows.
In Chapter 1, fist of all, we identify the purpose and necessity of research and establish research methodology. In addition, we review prior studies to clarify the subject and method of the study, especially focusing on how to select vocabulary for academic purposes.
Chapter 2 looked at the concepts and characteristics of academic vocabulary in order to explore the various theoretical backgrounds and to establish the concepts underlying the actual analysis, and divided them into three stages according to the learning stage. In order to find more suitable teaching and learning method, we summarize the concepts and effects of CBI and examine their characteristics by dividing them into three main types.
In Chapter 3, to select the basic vocabulary for Biology major, the textbook which is used in the major course of domestic university is analyzed, and the vocabulary with high frequency is selected and listed. And then we examine the features and types of selected vocabulary in order to prepare effective means of vocabulary education.
Chapter 4 presents the teaching methods and models of selected basic vocabulary for Biology major. First, Based on the characteristics of the selected vocabulary, we propose a meaningful vocabulary education method using visual data or the synthesis principle of Sino-Korean. And then presents a model of integrated teaching with the reading function applying the adjunct language instruction model, which is one type of CBI.
