A robot using a pneumatic system can provide safety in collaboration between a human and a robot. However, due to the efficiency and performance problems and large overhead, the robot using the pneumatic system has a disadvantage that it is difficult to be used within human environment. Previously, researchers have developed a variety of systems to recycle compressed air, but have not considered the relationship between performance degradation and efficiency in the process of recycling compressed air. In this study, a compressed air recirculation system using a soft re-air valve has been developed to improve the efficiency of the pneumatic system while preserving the performance by preventing residual pressure. The compressed air recirculation system is designed as a semi-closed circulation system, which receives outside air when the air inside the system is insufficient. In addition, the soft re-air valve has been bio-inspired by the heart of a fish. Outer wall of the soft re-air valve is composed of a hyper-elastic material, by using this material, the soft re-air valve goes through large volume change, thus being able to reduce the residual pressure inside the actuator. For the inner wall, plastic has been used to prevent the initial volume from decreasing by negative pressure. In this paper, we designed the prototype of the soft re-air valve and air recirculation system. A testbed was constructed to evaluate the characteristics and performance of the recirculation system. In order to do so, the compressor rest time ratio, the residual pressure of the pneumatic artificial muscle, and the tracking performance were evaluated and analyzed. As a result, the developed recirculation system increased the system efficiency by 22.5% compared to conventional pneumatic systems that discards compressed air. In addition, the residual pressure within the pneumatic artificial muscle decreased by 66.7%. Also, the tracking performance was enhanced when the recirculation system was applied to actual system using pneumatic artificial muscle. The overall weight of the recirculation system is 2.7 kg, but the weight of the soft re-air valve itself is only 100 g. An air recirculation system using soft re-air valve developed in this paper can be applied to wide range of robots using a pneumatic systems to improve the efficiency and performance.
