The electrochromic devices (ECDs) can change the optical properties according to external applied voltage. The ECDs are attracted enormous attention as a device applicable to various next generation applications due to their advantages such as low energy consumption, stable memory effect and high discoloration efficiency. This ECDs have a total of five layers in the order of transparent electrode, cathodic electrochromic layer, electrolyte, cathodic electrochromic layer, and another transparent electrode. Among these, electrochromic layers exhibit electrochromic properties such as such as a change in transmittance, coloration efficiency, switching speed with reversible intercalation/deintercalation of Li+. As the materials constituting the electrochromic layers, there are viologens, conjugated conductive polymers, and transition metal oxides. The transition metal oxides (WO3, MoO3, NiO, V2O5, etc.) have attracted much attention due to their variety of composition and structure, excellent electrochromic performance, low cost electrochemical stability, high durability and low cost. Among these transition metal oxides, V2O5 has received great interest due to their unique properties that it can realize various colors according to the applied voltage and can realize both cathodic and anodic electrochromic properties. However, V2O5 limited their electrochromic properties due to disadvantages such as narrow transmittance variation width, low switching speed due to low electric conductivity and ion conductivity, and low coloration efficiency. Therefore, there are enormous efforts to improve the electrochromic properties of V2O5. The direction of research of improving electrochromic properties of V2O5 can be broadly classified into two types, namely, the morphology change and the electronic structure change of the V2O5 films. So, in this paper, we tried to develop a V2O5 film for high performance electrochromic devices by synergy effect combining two performance enhancement methods of morphological change and electrical structure modification of V2O5 films. First, In order to optimize the deposition conditions and control the morphology of V2O5 films using sol-gel method and spin coating, the V2O5 films were prepared by adding polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) which acts as an adhesive and coordinating agent. The V2O5 film with 10wt% PVP showed the optimum electrochromic properties due to the improved film deposition and modified surface morphology due to addition of the optimized amount of PVP (transmittance modulation of 45.4%, bleaching speed of 2.7 s, coloring speed of 5 seconds, and coloration efficiency of 29.8 cm2/C). Futhermore, for high performance of electrochromic performance of V2O5 films, Fe doped V2O5 films were prepared by controlling the amount of Fe doping. As a results, The dense film structure and oxygen vacancies were formed by Fe doping effect on the V2O5 films, 1.0 at% Fe doped V2O5 film exhibited improved switching speed(coloring speed of (2.0 s, bleaching speed of 3.7 s) and good coloration efficiency (47.3 cm2/C) as compared with other films. Therefore, we believed that the unique Fe doped V2O5 film can be a promising electrochromic material for high performance of electrochromic devices.
