Abstract
A Study on Improvement of Corrosion Protection of Aluminum Railway Vehicle Body by Bolt Coating Treatment
Lee, Jae Won (Supervisor Kim, Ho Kyung and Kwon, Seok Jin) Dept. of Rolling stock System Engineering Graduate School of Railroad Seoul National University of Science and Technology
In this paper, corrosion tests were performed on aluminum specimens for aluminum car body material(A6005A) and for major outside environmental factors such as detergent for washing railway vehicle, tap water, salt water due to corrosion in the bolt area which is the joint between the vehicle body and parts. Corrosion occurs at the joint between the car body and the parts. Corrosion resistance of different types of metals is compared with that of aluminum by selecting corrosion resistant bolts used in the joints. These are carbon steel bolts, dacro bolts, electro galvanized bolts, geomet bolts, and delta bolts, etc. The temperature of the tap water was maintained at 35° C for 500 hours. As a result, the aluminum and the carbon steel bolt specimens underwent slight corrosion, but the weight of the aluminum specimen bonded with the zinc treated surface was increased respectively. In other words, in neutral tap water, it was confirmed that aluminum formed passive films and corrosion did not proceed. In the case of the detergent, the temperature was maintained at 35° C and each specimen was thoroughly immersed for 500 hours. As a result, the detergent caused corrosion on all specimens of aluminum bolts. At the initial stage of immersion, the aluminum was protected by the sacrificial anode of zinc, but the corrosion was accelerated by reversing the potential over time. In the case of salt water, the salt spray test was carried out for each specimen at a temperature of 35°C and a concentration of 5%. As a result, it was confirmed that corrosion occurred in both bolt specimens bonded with aluminum, and corrosion was accelerated with the elapse of time with the sacrificial anode of zinc at the beginning of the test as in the case of the detergent immersion test. The study found that the major factors that produce corrosion were largely affected by the order of detergent, salt water and tap water. Also, it was confirmed that galvanic corrosion was remarkably reduced when using aluminum bolt or delta bolt for each main factor, but it was also confirmed that corrosion degree was somewhat high in the detergent.
