The present article is the result of a study on electric fire risks of PVC insulation materials and insulted electric cable resulting from insulation deterioration, where accelerated deteriorated experiments were conducted by using Arrhenius equation for PVC insulation materials and IV insulated electric cable (60227 KS IEC 01) producing experimental samples with an equivalent year of 0 year, 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, and 40 years. Subsequently, tracking experiments were conducted for PVC insulation material, while tendency toward electric fire due to overcurrent was analyzed as a function of increase in equivalent life by application of high currents ranging from 100% to 500% of the rated current for IV insulated electric cable. Also, for detailed identification of risks for the sheath of IV insulated electric cable as a result of accelerated deterioration experiment, currents at which initial carbonization occur were derived and analyzed. To observer composition characteristics and surface of the sheath for insulated electric cable as a function of accelerated deterioration, the samples with equivalent life of 0 year and 40 years were comparatively analyzed by using FT-IR spectrometer and scanning electron microscope. Based on the above results, to prevent electric fire risks due to insulation deterioration accounting currently for the highest relative weight in electric fires, product replacement and institutional preparation of recommended service life are considered necessary that consider risks as a function of equivalent life of PVC insulation material and IV insulated electric cable which continue to be deteriorated as being used thus far for aged buildings. Also, when periodic replacement is executed by designating service life for PVC insulation material and IV insulated electric cable as well as electric products using insulation materials, occurrence probabilities for electric fire every year due to insulation degradation is considered to be reduced.
