An earthquake is one of the most extreme forms of natural disasters, which are experienced by mankind. Since it can cause serious consequences to the lives and properties, it is highly necessary to overcome this extreme condition. Some countries, which have frequently experienced earthquakes historically, have thoroughly prepared for them from the design stage of the building, because they are well aware of the severe consequences of them. Nevertheless, mankind still doesn’t have the technology to predict the occurrence of earthquakes. Even an earthquake lasting for a few tens of seconds to several minutes can cause casualties due to structural collapse. Therefore, earthquakes still are considered as a challenge to scientists and technicians. The number of earthquakes has been increasing in South Korea since the earthquake observation began in 1978. However, the intensity of these earthquakes South Korea has not been severe. Consequently, direct damage to lives and structure has not been reported. Due to the same reason, South Koreans have not prepared for the earthquake desperately, although they have recognized the needs of coping with it. However, the importance of earthquake countermeasures (seismic retrofitting) began to be emphasized since 2016 Gyeongju Earthquake and 2017 Pohang Earthquake. The conventional seismic retrofitting method and the reinforcement method using the new composite member have too many shortfalls to be applied to domestic R/C buildings. Additionally, previously developed vibration damping systems are generally installed at the construction stage and it is challenging to install it to an existing construction structure in order to reinforce against earthquake. Furthermore, the installation cost of the vibration damping system is too expensive, yet it does not show effective vibration damping for the expected level of earthquake load. Consequently, it has several problems: it does not control the building structure appropriately because the intention of the vibration damping system installation is lost, it does cope with the building structure appearance demands requiring aesthetic functions, and it is hard to be applied for the seismic retrofitting of R/C buildings which have relatively smaller deformability than a steel structure. This study proposed a damper brace system using a high-tension spring (HTS retraction system) that can complement and overcome the disadvantages of existing vibration damping systems and can be effectively applied to existing R/C structures. At the same time, the member performance and the energy dissipation capacity were checked through experiments. Moreover, this study proposed the dynamic stability characteristics for analyzing the non-linear dynamics of buildings reinforced by the HTS damper system based on the results of structural tests, while examining the seismic strengthening effects (dynamic stability characteristics), energy dissipating ability, and the seismic response control ability at the same time. Additionally, based on the suggested dynamic stability characteristics, the non-linear dynamic analysis was conducted and the results were compared with the results of a pseudodynamic test. Lastly, the non-linear dynamic analysis was conducted for the R/C buildings reinforced by the HTS damper system in order to commercialize the HTS damper system. Therefore, this study could evaluate the seismic retrofitting effects by examining the energy dissipation capacity, equivalent viscous damping ratio, seismic displacement response, and seismic response acceleration. When the members of the HTS damper system were tested, the mean error rate was 0.48% at the maximum displacement and 1.54% at the minimum displacement under the condition 1 of KBC-2016 seismic equipment suitable condition. Moreover, it was 3.258% at the maximum displacement and 0.45% at the minimum displacement under the condition 1. Under the condition 3, the mean error rate was 1.84%, which satisfied all suitable conditions. The results of the cycling load test showed that the specimen (the HTS damper system was applied to) had approximately 1.4 to 1.9times of resisting force at 20mm, which was the same displacement, compared to the standard specimen. Moreover, the resisting force increased about 2.0 times compared to the final resisting force of the standard specimen, showing the effectiveness of the seismic retrofitting effects. On the other hand, the results of the pseudodynamic test revealed that the seismic retrofitting specimen had approximately 1.58 and 1.80 times higher seismic response resisting force at 300 and 400gal, respectively, compared to the standard specimen. Additionally, the displacement response was 0.72 times at 300gal and 0.94 times at 400gal compared to that of the standard specimen at 300gal, showing that the effects of the HTS damper system increased with a higher seismic load. The results showed that the seismic retrofitting technique was effective. The precise nonlinear dynamic analysis at the member level was conducted using CANNY, which is a 3D analysis program targeting 2-story actual framework with reflecting the dynamic stability characteristics of the non-reinforced framework and the HTS damper system. Afterward, the results were compared with the experimental results with and without the HTS damper system application. The comparison showed that overall load-displacement, time-displacement, and time-load hysteric behavior showed a similar pattern. As a result, it is believed that the applied non-linear analysis model and method could simulate the behaviors of the HTS damper system and the R/C framework using it. It is also believed that it is possible to evaluate the seismic retrofitting effects of the HTS damper system effectively. The equivalent viscous damping ratio was calculated according to the loading displacement from the hysteric behavior obtained from the cycling load member test of the HTS damper system. The results showed that it had 40% equivalent viscous damping ratio. A non-linear dynamic analysis was conducted on the existing RC buildings. The results indicated that the maximum value of the interlayer relative displacement was around 7mm for the ground acceleration in the weak and intermediate intensity earthquakes. Under the strong earthquake condition with relatively higher ground acceleration, it showed around 20mm. The results of computer simulation and the results of the actual experiment were compared. The analysis values of initial stiffness and yield strength were almost identical. Therefore, it was considered that it would be possible to evaluate the HTS damper system and the existing structure using it by using this computer program. The seismic performance before and after applying the HTS damper system was evaluated. The plasticity generation condition and the interlayer displacement of each member always satisfied target performance. It could be concluded that appropriate reinforcement was achieved. The linear and non-linear time record analyses were conducted to confirm the convenience of analyses. The results showed that the responses of non-linear time record analysis were higher, but the non-linear analysis was higher at the attenuation after the maximum response due to the non-linear behavior of each member. In conclusion, it would be possible to effectively increase the resistance to the transverse load of existing buildings, which do not have seismic design and seismic retrofitting, by applying the HTS damper system. Moreover, it is possible to evaluate the seismic performance using the non-linear static analysis. Additional studies (the distribution of transverse load when applying a non-linear static analysis) are required if it is necessary to predict responses accurately such as non-linear time record analysis.
