Due to the concentration of population in urban areas, multi-dwelling houses that have become the most common type of housing in South Korea take up 75.6% of the entire housing, 60.6% of which is apartments. Since many households share ceilings and floors in apartment houses, noise between floors have become a huge social issue. The problematic floor impact sound in apartments are influenced by various factors such as building structure, resilient materials, construction method, and ceiling. Among them, ceiling is installed in most apartments, and it has been researched that heavy-weight impact sound amplifies in a low-frequency band when ceiling is installed. Although research on the hanger of ceiling, areal density of surface material, and components (sound absorbing material) inside the ceiling to control the heavy-weight impact sound of ceiling, it has failed to fully improve the amplification of heavy-weight impact sound and requires further research to control it as a result. To control the amplification of floor impact sound that occurs when installing ceiling, this study proposed 3 sound absorption ceiling panels which are: a porous sound absorbing material, resonant sound absorbing panel, and a sound absorbing gypsum panel. The study analyzed the reduction performance of floor impact sound through sound absorption coefficient and floor impact sound experiments. The results were as below. First, the floor impact sound experiment of ceiling that used a porous sound absorbing material showed that porous sound absorbing material (glass-wool) reduced heavy-weight impact sound by 1 dB ~ 2 dB more than the regular ceiling panel (not porous sound absorbing panel) based on the single numerical average. Although the reduction of floor impact sound increased as the thickness of porous sound absorbing material increased, there was little reduction of the sound with higher density of the sound absorbing material. Next, the experiment result of resonant sound absorbing ceiling panel showed that this material decreased heavy-weight impact sound by 2 dB of bang machine to 3dB of rubber ball than a regular gypsum board based on a single numerical average, but the impact sound was amplified in the 63 Hz band compared to the bare slab. According to the experiment result of floor impact sound for sound absorbing gypsum panel, the sound absorption gypsum panel + glass-wool and the double-layered ceiling panel of sound absorption gypsum reduced the heavy-weight impact sound by 3 dB ~ 4 dB more than a regular gypsum board, and the single-layered sound absorbing gypsum panel decreased the heavy-weight impact sound by 1dB. However, the impact sound was amplified in the 63Hz band as in the regular ceiling. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a follow-up research on evaluating the performance of sound absorption material inside a ceiling air bound and controlling the amplification of floor impact sound within 63 Hz band.
