Electrodialysis was used as a part of the development of a highly efficient process for concentrating and recovering lithium containing 3.2 g/L of lithium containing raw material solution that is generated after recovering valuable metals from a waste lithium ion battery. A batch test that used continuous electrodialysis unit (batch test cell) and contains a pair of ion exchange membranes and an electrodialysis using an Electro Dialyzer with 10 pairs of ion exchange membranes was used to concentrate lithium from lithium containing raw material solution effectively. NEOSEPTA CSE․ASE was used as an ion exchange membrane, and a batch test cell with 3 baths and a pair of ion exchange membrane was fabricated and used for the batch test. When the total ion concentration in the raw material solution was less, the migration behavior of ions could be confirmed in a short time. To efficiently concentrate lithium, increasing the contact area between the solution and membrane is necessary. The migration behavior of Li+, Na+ and SO42- was investigated using HCl and Na2SO4 as anolytes. When 1.0 M HCl was used, the migration rate of SO42- was slower, but all elements exhibited similar behavior. Moreover, Na2SO4 used should be of least 0.1 M or higher in order to be used as an electrolyte, because the voltage rapidly increased as the concentration of Na2SO4 decreased. Based on the results of batch test and in accordance with the reference paper, we used an Electro Dialyzer for analyzing lithium concentration and investigated the resulting behavior of applied voltage. The optimum condition was 10 V in terms of the time required for electrodialysis, water recovery rate and average flux. Considering that the concentration rate decreased due to osmotic pressure that caused water migration, further manipulation, such as an adjustment in the volume ratio of dilute and concentrate solutions or multi-step concentration was required. The effect of volume ratio on dilute and concentrate solutions was investigated and adjusted to 4:1 at 8 V and 10 V respectively. The result showed that the concentration of lithium ions was up to 4.4 g/L at an applied voltage of 10 V and volume ratio of 4:1. To investigate the concentration of lithium based on large volume ratio, the total volume of the raw material solution was fixed, and the volume ratio of the dilute solution to the concentrate solution was adjusted to 10:1. Thus, concentration of lithium was increased and then decreased due to the osmotic phenomenon. When the concentration ratio, average flux, and energy consumption were considered, the 3:1 condition was most efficient and the concentrated lithium was 5.3 g/L. Through these experiments, it was confirmed that obtaining a higher lithium concentrate solution is possible through further operation such as multistage concentration.
