Gas cyclone has two main parameters for evaluating separation performance, separation efficiency and pressure drop. They are closely influenced by cyclone shape and operational conditions. This study performed multi-objective optimization of the separation performance for different the geometrical design variables of the cyclone based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), response surface methodology (RSM), GMDH type neural network and genetic algorithm (GA) and analyzed the optimization result in terms of the force acting on the particles in the cyclone. First, CFD was used to obtain the data sample of the separation performance, which was used to derive a robust meta-model of the performance parameter. As result of the CFD validation, the errors of the reference model and CFD were 0.5 % and 2 % for the pressure drop and the separation efficiency. Secondly, the meta model of the performance parameters were derived by using RSM based on statistical techniques and GMDH algorithm based on supervised learning of machine learning. The fitness of the modelling was shown using the correlation coefficient (R2). As results of the two meta-modeling method, the values of the R2 of the meta-models of the separation performance by the two modeling methods were very similar. The R2 of meta models of the separation efficiency and the pressure drop were close to 98.9 %, 99.7 %, respectively. Finally, second-generation non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) was applied to optimize the meta model of the performance parameters of the cyclone. NSGA-II was resulted in 70 non-dominant solutions and five optimal points were compared using CFD. The trade-off optimum performance was improved by 24.31 % and 8.32 % for pressure drop and the separation efficiency, respectively. Then, the optimization result was analyzed by analyzing the mechanical behavior of the swirling particle in the cyclone in terms of the force acting on the particle by using UDF. The swirl flow of the optimized cyclone was analyzed using CFD. And the result of the optimized cyclone was analyzed about whether the secondary circulation occurred by using vector field of CFD. This showed that the area where the secondary circulation occurs was reduced at the optimized cyclone.
