The purpose of this study is to investigate the interpretations of English dative construction focusing on constraints on dative alternation and preference between Prepositional Dative Construction(PDC) and Double Object Construction(DOC) by Korean learners of English. Sixty university students in Korea participated in the study and were divided into three groups according to their English language proficiency. Five types of verbs that are used in dative construction were used to test the learners' response towards distinct types of the sentences: Verbs allowing dative alternations, PDC-only verbs - one type related to broad semantic constraint and the other with narrow semantic constraint, DOC-only verbs related to narrow semantic constraint, and finally PDC-only verbs due to morphological constraint. Sixty Korean university students learning English and 10 native speakers of English participated in the grammaticality judgement task, the production task and a questionnaire survey.
The overall pattern of the results are as follow: Frist, Korean learners of English showed sensitivity to broad semantic constraint. Second, Korean learners of English did not show sensitivity to narrow semantic constraint, in that they performed better with PDC-only verbs than DOC-only verbs with respect to narrow semantic constraints. As for the sentences with morphological constraint, Korean learners of English didn't show sensitivity to the ungrammatical DOC, which seems to imply that Koran learners do not fully understand the morphological constraint in English dative alternations. In addition, Korean learners of English showd preference for PDC over DOC regardless of their language proficiency, which can be related to their knowledge from L1. Also, the learners with high proficiency performed better than those with low proficiency with 3 types of the test sentences. Finally, the learners' performance over dative constructions differed according to semantic property of a dative verbs.
The results of this study seem to indicated that due to Korean learners' preference for PDC over DOC in English and their different proficiency levels, proper teaching methodology should be considered to teach English dative construction to the learner with Korean L1. Further pedagogical implications are discussed more in detail.
