In the conventional method to manufacture the color contact lenses, there are several processes such as injecting ink using an etching plate, picking up injected ink with a silicon pad, and transferring a picked-up image to a mold, etc. However, these processes loss materials unnecessarily, are not only inefficient but also environment unfriendly. For example, color pigment particles remained on the etching plate should be washed out and the silicon pad could be contaminated during the process. In addition, the method is not efficient because due to the accumulation of fatigue during production, it is often necessary to replace the materials used for production. Moreover, in the traditional production method, it is also difficult to increase the resolution of the image due to the contact transfer of the image. Although it is simple to print a pattern on a flat surface, printing an image with a diameter of dot size less than 50μm on a lens surface requires significant skills. Therefore, many researchers are making efforts to produce lenses with high resolution and reduce unnecessary material losses. In this thesis, a new printing method for manufacturing color contact lens is proposed to overcome previous shortcomings. To use the inkjet printing for 3D surface printing, the ink with a low viscosity which is 10 to 20 cPs should be used due to the characteristics of the inkjet nozzle and the distance between the nozzle and the printing substrate is limited to improve pattern accuracy. When printing on a flat plane surface, stand off distance is usually less than 1mm, but the gap is inevitably raised when printing on a curved surface. In order to resolve the problems, this thesis suggests directly printing on the curved surface by making the jetting speed more faster through waveform design. We found that jetting speed more than 8 m/s is required for proper deposition on 3D surface. Even if the ink is low viscous, thesis described a method for preventing ink from flowing down from the curved surface during printing. This technique organizes algorithm to reduce ink drying time by increasing the plate temperature at 40℃ or obtain high resolution printed pattern on the lenses by using ultra-violet (UV) lamp with the power of 0.3W. The results show that inkjet printing method can be used to print on the curved surface on the basis of jetting drive and proper curing algorithm.
