The purpose of this study is to know the criteria and method of determining the location and direction of ridge skin based on theoretical review and data analysis of palmprint and soleprint. The human has a skin with ridge that can be used to identify individuals. Fingerprint, one of the representative ridge skin, have been used for over 100 years and as a mean of traditional identification. Palmprint, one of the ridge skin has no systematic system about database construction, method and standard of identifying people. The palmprint isn't used actively in practice, but it can be used to identify individual in equal level of fingerprint. In this study, it analyzes palmprint in 200 Korean adults, each 100 males and females and footprint in 100 Korean adults, each 50 males and females. The method of analysis has three ways. There are frequency analysis, One-way ANOVA, and t-test. The results of analysis are as follows. First, it is about whether the set of ridges originated from the hands and feet. The palmprint and footprint are easy to distinguish more intuitively than fingerprint because they are remained in large area, but in the narrow area, it suggests ridge density criterion of ridge skins for distinguishing because it can distinguish by measuring ridge density. The average of ridge density in palmprint is 13.10/25㎟, the average of ridge density in footprint is 9.41/25㎟, so the palmprint’s ridge density is higher than footprint's. They show significant differences between groups of palmprint and footprint. Second, for the way of distinguishing fingerprint or palmprint, it can see shape of palmprint ridge which flows differently with fingerprint by analyzing shape of delta and flow of ridge near the delta. The shape of the delta was determined by measuring the three angles that make up the delta. It appears each differences between the three angles in the delta under the middle finger is 12.98, under the ring finger of palmprint is 16.78 and under the little finger of palmprint is 14.28, but difference between the three angles in the delta which is observed in fingerprint and delta under the index finger of palmprint and carpal delta is less than 5. Based on this, the delta under the middle, ring and little finger of the palmprint were found to have an unequal angle. The ridge flow around the delta of the fingerprint has a horizontal ridge flow between two delta, and the ridge flow around the palmprint delta has a vertical ridge flow between two delta. Third, it is about partial palmprint goes for which part. At the crime scene, the palmprint are partially collected, but the palmprint collected for the known samples are collected in one image. In order to be used in a single sample test, it is very important to determine which partial palmprint collected at the crime scene corresponds to which part of the palm of the entire palm and which direction. It has been demonstrated that the area and direction of the partial palmprint can be determined. And suggested the criteria for this. I used a method to measure the overall flow of the palmprint, the frequency of the pattern, and the three angles of the delta of the interdigital region. Each pattern of palmprint does not occur accidentally geographically in the area of palmprint. In palmprints, deltas occur at high frequencies under each finger and above the wrist. Delta was found to be 99.8% below the index finger, 99.8% below the middle finger, 90% below the ring finger, 95.8% below the little finger, and 100% above the wrist. In the interdigital region, the pattern occurs at the highest frequency in the Ⅵ zones between the middle and the ring finger. Pattern was found to be 1% in the Ⅱ zone of the interdigital region, 13.5% in the Ⅲ zone of the interdigital region, 83.3% in the Ⅵ zone of the interdigital region and 7% in the thenar region, 34.5% in the hypothenar region. The angles of delta in the interdigital region that can be shown in how to determine the position and orientation of palmprint are as follows. The features of the delta below index finger are that on average three angles are about the same size, and the delta under the middle and ring finger is the angle of looking at the fingers was significantly smaller than the other two angles. And the delta under the little finger is the angle of looking at the thenar was significantly smaller than the other two angles. The analysis results of this study suggest the following policy and institutional aspects. In light of foreign cases where we take a positive attitude toward the value of palmprint evidence and use them in criminal procedures, the palmprint system of Korea should be developed. From now on, it is necessary to consider the necessity of building a database through palmprint data collection. And the legal system needs to be improved, and palmprint will have to be obligatorily collected with genetic information. I hope that the development and settlement of the palmprint system naturally follows.
