Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a representative photocatalytic oxide showing strong hydrophilicity. Because of non-toxicity and chemical/thermal stability, anatase titanium dioxide is known as a good material to form a hydrophilic thin film. This thesis presents an experimental study of hydrophilic anatase TiO2 from sputter deposition to atomic-level analysis using XRD, ATR-FTIR, and XPS. The principles of hydrophilicity on TiO2 surface is discussed and a new mechanism model is proposed to understand the contact angle relaxation and long-term hydrophilicity in real world. In-situ polycrystalline anatase TiO2 thin film was made without annealing under the deposition condition of affluent oxygen partial pressure (≥5.67, PO2/PAr) by DC magnetron sputtering. The films tend to grow from the early random orientation to A(211) oriented polycrystalline as deposition time increases. As the oxygen gas flow rate was high, A(211) facet grew more. Therefore, oxygen partial pressure and the deposition time/thickness can be considered as the key parameters that promote the growth of A(211) facet. The measured contact angle decreased somewhat linearly with the increase of the XRD intensity ratio of A(211)/A(101) up to about 50%. When it was higher than 50%, the angle saturated. XPS analysis shows that the higher the XRD intensity ratio of A(211)/A(101) is, the larger the area of O 1s (OH) band related to the dissociative adsorption of water is. The relative amount of water-related adsorbates, represented by the ratio of O 1s (OH) area to O 1s (Ti−O) area, was found to be inversely proportional to the contact angle. ATR-FTIR spectra also show that the water is adsorbed more on the formation of A(211) facet on the TiO2 surface. However, the contact angle increases over time. This contact angle relaxation of TiO2 surface is an important problem to be understood, particularly for the long-lasting hydrophilicity in the dark. We observed the relaxation of sputtered anatase TiO2 thin films over long time (~22 days) in the atmospheric environment by quantitative XPS analysis. A new peak as H2O with donor-acceptor complex at ~2.57 eV above the lattice oxygen peak was identified. The adventitious carbon contamination is not the cause of the contact angle relaxation. Instead, donor-acceptor complex turns out to be the key factor for long lasting hydrophilicity and our model for long term hydrophilicity is presented. Samples with less amount of donor−acceptor complex (IDAC/Ibulk ≤ ~5%) undergo the contact angle relaxation over time, whereas the ones with high-density donor-acceptor complex (IDAC/Ibulk ≥ ~10%) show good hydrophilicity (contact angle ≤ 20°) over 22 days. The larger the amount of basic Ti−OH relative to acidic OHbridge (ITi−OH/Ibridge ≥ 1), the greater the amount of donor−acceptor complex (IDAC/Ibulk ≥ ~10%). Further, TiO2 is transformed to show long lasting hydrophilicity by high-density oxygen plasma treatment by forming sufficient Ti−OH groups and H2O with donor−acceptor complex. Basic Ti−OH group interacts with H2O by forming the strong electrostatic donor−acceptor complex, leading to the long-lasting hydrophilicity. Therefore, the contact angle relaxation is closely related to the interactions between water molecules and TiO2 surface in the dark. We suggest that the relaxation depends on the amount of the electrostatic donor−acceptor complex. This thesis shows the experimental research from deposition to atomic-level analysis and discusses the principles of hydrophilicity of TiO2. We may provide new insights to understand the water dynamics at water−TiO2 interfaces.
