Nanocomposite of chitosan biopolymer and layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet is developed for the adsorption of ionic and non-ionic spherical vesicles such as liposome and niosome. The LDH is layered inorganic materials composed of permanently positively charged metal hydroxide layers and interlayer balancing anions that are chemically exchangeable. The chitosan polymer is incorporated into the LDH matrix during the reconstruction process of calcined LDH, which is a structural recovery process of thermally de-structured LDH materials. The calcination-reconstruction produces few nm-thick LDH nanosheets in comparison with its pristine LDH of few hundreds thickness. Combination of exfoliated LDH nanosheet with succinylated chitosan gave a porous nanocomposite, which is supported by broad (110) reflection of the composite in XRD measurement. The pristine LDH particles can only absorb a very small amount of fluorescein ions on the particle surface, so no significant reduction in PL spectra, however, the nanocomposite of LDH and succinylated chitosan polymer exhibits over 95 % uptake of fluorescein ions. Reconstruction of LDH with chitosan biopolymer in water resulted in larger FWHM values in (003) and (006) peaks compared to the case of pristine LDH, indicating that a thickness of LDH particles reduced into a few nanometer sizes. The nanocomposite of reconstructed LDH and chitosan biopolymer is used as a hybrid carrier for retinol, which is encapsulated by noisome, a sphere type of vesicle. The niosome incorporated nanocomposite has a sharp peak at 326 nm corresponding to the characteristic adsorption of retinol due to the incorporation of niosome vesicles into porous structure of the nanocomposites. This result is also supported by BET results that showed the change of specific surface areas of the dried ones: pristine LDH (8.3 m2/g), recovered LDH (47.6 m2/g), and chitosan-LDH nanocomposite (64.4 m2/g), respectively. Considering the porous structure and chemically stable inorganic nanosheet of the nanocomposite, the chitosan-LDH nanocomposites can be potentially used as hybrid vesicle carriers with chemical and photostability. In addition, biocompatibility of chitosan biopolymer and LDH mineral will open new applications in cosmetics.
