Language changes along with the passage of time. As the society changes, words that people use may disappear with new words emerging. In recet years, the changing rate of the society is accelerating, which has made the creation of new words active. Reflecting the society or culture of a language, new words play an important role in its understanding. New words are used daily in broadcasting and Internet, which raises a need to unerstand new words for smooth communication.
New words do not last long, and most of them disapper shortly, which makes it inefficient to learn each and every new word. Some of words in new words are often used or productive. If one figures them out and understands their meanings, it will be helpful to guess the meanings of unfamiliar new words. The purpose of this study is thus to examine and compare productive compositive elements in the areation of new words based on new words in Korean and Japanese.
Chapter 3 classified new words by the word type and found that there wew similar patterns of organization in the word types between new words in Korean and those in Japanese. Hybrids words were the most in number, being followed by loanwords, Sino-Korean or Japanese words, and native Korean or Japanese words in the order. New words solely made of native Korean or Japanese words accounted for mare 10% in Korean and Japanese, respectively, which suggests that it is difficult to make new words with native Korean of Japanese vocabulary. New words containing native Korean or Japanese vocabulary accounted for 20% or more of hybrid words. Native Korean or Japanese vocabulary can create more new words by combining with oter word types, which is a common feature with hybrid words.
The study then classified new words by the word formation. In Korean, derivation recorded the highest percentage, being followed by blending, compounding, abbreviation, calque, form change and meaning change in the order. In Japanese, compounding recorded the highest percentage, being followed by blending, abbreviation, calque, derivation, meaning change and form change in the order.
Chapter 4 identified productive compositive elements used in the creation of new words and compared them between Korean and Japanese. There were 150 and 53 productive compositive elements in the creation of new words in Korean and Japanese, respectively. Some parts of words became compositive elements in new words both in Korean and Japanese. In Korean, some compositive elements were based on the shortening of bigger units than words.
The study examined compositive elements for new words in Korean and Japanese by the word type and found some common elements in meanings, original words, and functions. As for loanword-based compositive element, they may have different parts eve though they derive from the same original words.
Of compositive elements for new words in Korean and Japanese, the ones related to "man" semantically showed a high level of productivity. In Korean, in particular, compositive elements with meanings relatied to "man" were used in 20% or more of the entire new words, thich indicates their prominent productivity. In addition to compositive elements related to "man," there were diverse ones related to "food" and "social media."
The present study demonstrated the trends and characteristics of new words in Korean and Japanese, but it has some limitation with the objectivity of data due to different selection criteria for new words between the languages. If future study increases the objectivity of data by taking into deep consideration the selection criteria of new words in Korean and Japanese, it will conduct more significant control research on new words.
