This study aims to explore the social role of cafes in Korea, based on the subjective experience and perception of individuals. It attempts to discuss in which meanings cafes are consumed in private and public spheres, with consumers' consumption of cafes and changing life style. This study is meaningful in that cafes are places where it is possible to see the representative civil society, because they have become such important part of people's lives. It is possible to check the changing life styles and consumer needs, and understand the changes of civil society. For the purpose of the study, 98 major questions on perception of cafes were selected and the perception types were sorted out for 65 participants by applying Q methodology. As result, three factors appeared on perception of cafes. Specifically, the upper and lower questions of each factor were interpreted into separate group types and six group types were deduced. Thus, each perception was clearly distinguished through an analysis on the relation with each factor. Out of the three factors, ‘modern salon (factor 1)’and ‘omni public sphere (factor 3)’ are people who make up the spatial meaning of cafes. While the modern salon recognizes the cafe as role of a so-called public sphere where people can communicate with each other, on the other hand, the omni public sphere recognizes the cafe as a place where the role of the public sphere is extended through the internet or working at a cafe, rather than actually facing someone. ‘Cafe habitus (factor 2)' does not expect a public sphere role of the cafe, but influences the habitus with the value of coffee and the cafe itself. Each factor perceives and uses the cafe in a different way, depending on the life style and purpose. However, as a characteristic of the use of cafes and activities, civil inattention arises when little spaces are shared with others and efforts are made to solve social and physical distance. The modern salon was sub-categorized into ‘preference for convenient facilities (upper)’ and ‘accessory consumer (lower)’, cafe habitus was sub-categorized into ‘coffee person (upper)’ and ‘practical person (lower)’, and omni public sphere was sub-categorized into ‘cafe nomad (upper)’ and ‘cafe settler (lower).’ This study identifies the types based on the subjectivity of cafe consumers and workers, and checked each type's perception of cafes. The perception and experience of consumers on cafes act as an important background which decided how they view a cafe. Factors show the difference between each of the perceptions, but the high correlation of factors 1 and 3 show that people using cafes as a place for communication and individuals visiting cafes for online activities, are not mutually exclusive. In other words, representative groups of different factors - people with preference for convenient facilities and cafe nomads - are two different groups which change according to the purpose of using cafes. Cafes are multi-purpose spaces which reflect the purpose of consumer groups, from a meeting point to personalized space, from a cafe of professionality to cafes with a purpose with additional functions other than cafes. In a sociological view, the two factors are the square of people with various everyday life forms, requesting the public sphere and civil inattention at the same time.
