The domestic “Angel in the House” has long been considered the model of Victorian womanhood. The idea of the woman within the household ignores the many women working in farms, factories, shops and schools as well as domestic servants. As the century progressed, there were increasingly debates on the Woman Question dealing with topics of marriage, divorce, women’s property and the New Woman. Victorians were also in a world made strange by new technology. From the steam engines, railways, canals, telephones, telegraphs, gramophones, sewing machines, bicycles, typewriters to cameras, these new inventions testified that Victorian Britain was a period of enormous technological upheaval and change. In this context, my dissertation examines the relationship between Victorian working women and new inventions in non-canonical fiction during the late 1870s to 1890s. Just as the society was changing, so were novels beginning to portray heroines in professional fields such as telegraph operators, photographers, and seamstresses. In the first chapter, the new medium of the telegraph and its various social meanings have the characters Lucy and Sophy exemplify two different ways of being a woman (female subjectivities) in Anthony Trollope’s The Telegraph Girl (1877). Another work, Henry James’s In the Cage (1898), features an un-named telegraphist who interprets the details of her “grand clients” in highly imaginative ways and only at the end comes to realize that her fictionalizations are quite different from reality. In the second chapter, in Amy Levy’s The Romance of a Shop (1888), the camera was an object extending sight and vision—a tool that opened possibilities of women as auteurs and liberated them from training as an apprentice under the traditional artist. The female gaze mediated by the camera is contrasted to the male gaze of the traditional artist. Gertrude is “short-sighted” and Phyllis is “long-sighted” but in reality it is ironic that Gertrude is far-sighted in that she penetrates the surface of Sidney Darrell’s façade. In the third chapter, in John Law’s A Manchester Shirtmaker (1890) the sewing machine is a symbolic object that ties the female character to her traditional role and also serves as a metonymy of chastity and loyalty to her dead husband. Once it is pawned, all ties to her husband and daughter are severed. Finally, the conclusion summarizes the overarching themes of fatherless heroines, usage of machines, paid work, and social class. It also discusses areas for further study.
