A fall is defined as a case where body parts other than soles are grounded on the floor, irrespective of the intention of the person. Falls account for more than 33% of hospital accidents, however, no adequate post-accident measures were performed properly. Thereby, the necessity of establishing a management system of fall detection has been confirmed. Although most previous studies have focused on preventing patient falls, recent studies are focusing on how to detect the falls. Especially, researches on fall detection based on smartphone were conducted since no additional equipment is needed, other than a smartphone device which is found easily nowadays. Moreover, almost all previous studies have not considered user’s wearing experience. Therefore, in this study, I proposed a fall detection system based on a smartphone and a wearable sensor, fully considering wearability of patients, to detect patient falls that occur in hospitals. Thus, by placing accelerometer sensors on body parts of participants, motion data of falls and non-falls were collected. Then, the abilities of detecting falls and discriminating falls from non-falls according to each sensor position were evaluated by comparing levels of sensitivity and specificity. The wearability of sensor placement was assessed by evaluating user’s wearing experience on each sensor. Based on the results of this study, the inconvenience of wearing sensors can be improved to induce user to use the system all the time and prevent cases where falls are not detected. Through this study, damage of both primary and secondary injury can be minimized by detecting falls correctly and continuously in time. This study can be used as a basic data for building a system for detecting falls in hospitals. Besides, the medical institutions will be able to provide a safe and high-quality medical service by operating patient safety management system of fall risk.
