The mecanum wheel is a drive system capable of moving in all directions. For a typical wheel, only forward and backward movements are possible, and space for direction change is required. Mecanum wheels, on the other hand, can be rotated and moved back and forth without needing space for direction change. It is possible to maximize the space utilization efficiency in a narrow industrial field. However, the mecanum wheel system accumulates errors due to the wheel slip caused by the structural characteristics. As a result, the application of dead reckoning, a general location estimation method, is limited. In order to improve this, in this paper, we acquire the surrounding information with the lidar sensor and estimate the position of mobile robot by ICP technique. In order to reduce the measurement error of the Lidar sensor, a line-fitting ICP method is proposed, in which the scan data is projected on a straight line andthen the ICP method is applied. Finally, the position estimated by the Line-Fitting ICP method was corrected using the dead reckoning estimate obtained from the Encoder and IMU sensor information. In order to verify the proposed algorithm, we made a Mecanum wheel mobile robot equipped with LIDAR, ENCODER and IMU. And we experimented with this robot running on three paths. Experimental results show that the position estimation error accumulation due to the wheel slip does not occur in the position estimation by the Line-Fitting ICP technique. In addition, it is possible to estimate the position more accurately and stably than the existing ICP method.
