The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of smartphone use by the toddlers aged 12 months to 36 months according to their age, frequency of their smartphone watching, time when they first started to watch smartphones, and differences in their language development according to interactive intervention of their mothers. The subjects of this study were 197 mothers of the toddlers aged 12 months to 36 months attending daycare centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and they were selected through random sampling method and snowball sampling method. To examine the current status of the smartphone use by the toddlers, we created questionnaire items based on precedent studies by KICCE (Korea Institute of Child Care and Education, 2013), Gwak Ji-hye (2016), and Ryu Mi-hyang (2013). To measure the language development of toddlers, we used 'Sequenced Language Scale for Infants (SELSI)' developed by Kim Young-tae (2002). The mothers of the toddlers answered the questionnaire items, and we collected the questionnaire sheets through visit to the daycare centers, post, and e-mail. We calculated average scores of the questionnaire, average scores of each question, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage from the collected data and analyzed them through t-test and one-way analysis of variance. The results of this study are as follows; First, in terms of the smartphone use by toddlers aged 1 to 2 years old, the number of toddlers who watch smartphones ‘every day’ accounted for the largest percentage of 26% (2.6 toddlers) out of a total of 10 toddlers. Their average smartphone watching time per session was less than 30 minutes. However, it was found that their average watching time per session increases as they get older. The number of toddlers who started to watch smartphones when they were between 13 months and 18 months old accounted for the largest percentage of 36% (3.6 toddlers) out of a total of 10 toddlers. Second, most of the toddlers used smartphones ‘when their parents needed to do something', so they were the most likely to use smartphones in public places such as restaurants, shopping malls, and hospitals. The types of service that the toddlers used were mostly cartoons and animations. However, the toddlers aged 2 years old also watched the videos produced by YouTube, their next favorite service. Third, the later the toddlers started to watch smartphones, the higher their language scores. In other words, if the toddlers started to use smartphones when they became 18 months old or older, their expressive language and receptive language ability were both higher than when they started to use smartphone before they became 18 months old. Fourth, the language scores of the toddlers showed insignificant differences, but did not show statistically significant differences according to frequency of their smartphone watching. In addition, the language scores of the toddlers showed small differences according to interactive intervention of their mothers when they were using smartphones, but they were not statistically significant. In conclusion, it was found that the average age of the toddlers being first exposed to smartphones was getting younger and their frequency of watching smartphones was increasing. In addition, the later the toddlers’ first use of smartphones, the more positive it was for their language development. We expect that the results of this study will be used as basic data for parent education about the use of smartphones by their children in infancy.
