The ambient stress field is mainly influenced by regional tectonics. Stress field provides crucial information for seismic hazard assessment. This study investigates the regional variation of stress field in the eastern continental margin of the Eurasian plate around the Korean Peninsula and Japanese islands using a damped stress inversion technique based on focal mechanism solutions of regional earthquakes. The Korean Peninsula, Japanese Islands and East Sea comprise the eastern margin of the Eurasian plate. The regions are surrounded by the Okhotsk, Pacific, and Philippine Sea plates. The dominant compressional stress is directed in ENE-WSW around the Korean Peninsula and eastern China, in E-W at the central East Sea and northern and southern Japan, in NW-SE at central Japan, and in N-S around the northern Nankai trough. The dominant compression direction rapidly changes in the East Sea and Japanese islands. The local stress field is distorted by the crustal and tectonic structure. The maximum horizontal stress (σ1) directions around subduction zones are subparallel with the plate convergence directions. The lateral stress field changes by depth. The stress field and crustal structures affect mutually, reactivating paleo-structures. The East Sea was formed by a continental rifting during the Oligocene to mid-Miocene or back-arc spreading. Earthquakes are clustered around the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, illuminating the seismic zones in the western East Sea. It is crucial to understand the seismo-tectonic structures of the region, which may be useful for mitigating seismic hazards. Analyses of seismicity are useful for understanding the fault structures. This study investigates the focal mechanism solutions, ambient stress field and spatial distribution of earthquakes. The focal mechanism solutions of 38 events are determined using a P polarity analysis and long period waveform inversion. A large number of events are clustered in the western margin of East Sea where ENE-WSW directional compression occurs. The seismicity is composed of strike-slip and thrust earthquakes that occur in middle to lower crusts. The active strike-slip and thrust events, and compressional stress field may suggest reactivation of paleo-tectonic structures. The identification of potential locations for megathrust earthquakes is crucial for seismic hazard mitigation. This study investigates the influence of the spatial gradient of the static stress field, which is perturbed dominantly by precedent large earthquakes, on the nucleation of megathrust earthquakes. The static stress field perturbation is assessed by stacking the Coulomb stress changes by major earthquakes over a century. The cumulative Coulomb stress changes reach an order of tens of bars on plate collision boundaries. Great earthquakes occurred in the regions of large lateral gradients in cumulative Coulomb stress changes. The occurrence rate of postseismic moderate-sized earthquakes temporally increased in stress-shadow source regions following megathrust earthquakes, which may be due to medium relaxation and/or yield-strength reduction. The cumulative Coulomb stress changes for a century are comparable among subduction zones. The seismicity in subduction zone may depends on the strength of stress field as well as the lateral gradient in stress field. Great earthquakes may occur in regions of large stress gradients that are observed in various locations of major subduction zones. The role of slow slip in the stress accumulation at the slab interface is still unknown. This study investigates the variation of earthquake occurrence rate by Gutenberg-Richter magnitude-frequency rate (b value) the slip transition zone of the Nankai Trough. The b value increases significantly during the slow slip period and decreases. The b values were nearly stationary in the absence of slow slips. The overall b values were generally bounded between 0.6 and 1.0, suggesting the static stress changes during the slow slips. The released energy by the slow slips in Tokai region from 2012 to 2014 may be equivalent to the occurrence of thousands of Mw6 earthquakes. The released stress is recovered after several years in the slip transition zone. Non-periodic changes in b values suggest irregular occurrence of slow slips, incurring intermittent stress loading and release in the slip transition zone. Stress accumulation is clearly observed in the Tokai region, where a major earthquake is expected.
