The purpose of this study is to examine what needs to be considered for the instructional design of Korean cultural contents and for the development of improvement methods by analyzing the instructional design of Korean cultural contents for the Korean education by e-learning, centering on Kemp’s instructional design model. Therefore, some suggestions have been made regarding the contents development for cultural education based on implications from the analysis of Korean cultural contents on e-learning Korean education websites. In Chapter 1, the necessity of an instructional design analysis on Korean cultural contents by e-learning Korean education and the purpose of the study were discussed. Some previous studies were researched divided into studies on e-learning Korean education websites, studies to which the instructional design theories were applied in e-learning Korean education, and studies on cultural education utilizing multi-media or the Web. In Chapter 2, the theoretical backgrounds of e-learning and Korean education, of Korean education and cultural education, and of systemic instructional design were dealt with. In Chapter 3, seven websites that presented culture separately from e-learning Korean education were selected as the target of the analysis, and the analysis items and standard were provided by dividing the components of Kemp’s instructional design model into instructional planning and teaching learning support systems. In Chapter 4, the Korean cultural contents of e-learning Korean education was analyzed centering on Kemp’s instructional design model, and the results are as follows: First, in the instructional planning for Korean cultural contents, learners’ characteristics, the suggested instructional goals, the systematization of the contents, evaluation tools, etc. were analyzed. Of the seven target websites, four websites, ‘Nuri-Sejong Hakdang,’ ‘Multi-cultural Family e-Learning Campaign,’ ‘Bareun Korean,’ and ‘Learning Korean’ presented detailed instructional goals which served as the evaluation standard. The desirable composition of the learning contents was to include cultural items in a systematic, diverse manner, but the contents were actually composed so as to fit learners’ characteristics and production purposes of each website. As the ‘Multi-cultural Family e-Learning Campaign’ was produced targeting female immigrants for marriage, it consisted of cultural items suitable to multi-cultural families. As ‘Study Korean’ was produced for Korean nationals abroad, it dealt chiefly with Korean history and the achieved culture for the purpose of fostering ethnic identity. Looking into the evaluation tools of each website, the evaluation outcomes were provided in the contents produced in the form of WBI but were not provided in the form of videos or animations. Second, as for the type, quantity and language of the contents, which are instructional materials provided as a method of teaching Korean culture, videos, WBI and animations were chiefly adopted as types of the contents. For ‘Dynamic Korean Exciting hallyu,’ the cultural education contents were produced utilizing dramas, K-POP, etc. in order to develop contents in such a way to induce a practical, empirical learning and to raise learners’ interest. The quantities of the contents mostly required a ten-to-fifteen-minute play, and there were videos as short as three to five minutes and as long as about one hour. As for the languages, the contents were being delivered mostly in English or in Korean; ‘Nuri-Sejong Hakdang’ and ‘First-step Korean’ were captioned in various languages, and the Korean culture of ‘Multi-cultural Family e-Learning Campaign’ was produced in seven languages. As instructional strategies, the interactions between a learner and an instructor and between learners were being made mostly through replies on the noticeboards. For strategies to motivate people to be engaged in learning, ‘Nuri-Sejong Hakdang’ was offering character emoticons based on accumulated points after lessons, while ‘First-step Korean’ was giving a certificate when a learner completed a course. Third, to support learners’ learning in the method to implement the teaching learning support system for Korean cultural contents, ‘Click Korean’ provided a role-play function and ‘Frist-step Korean’ provided a Hangul-letters practicing program. To support mobile learning, ‘Nuri-Sejong Hakdang’ and ‘First-step Korean’ provided mobile applications, and ‘Bareun Korean’ provided contents linked to SNS in order to enhance mobile accessibility. In most websites, learners were supposed to check the My Page or Lesson Complete boxes so that the learning history and progress status could be inspected intuitively. The learning materials could be downloaded by MP3 or PDF so that the learners could perform a review or a repetitive learning. ‘Study Korean’ and ‘First-step Korean’ had a system in which some video contents could be partially downloaded. The continuous update of the contents was checked through the resource management in the project management domain; new contents were continuously being developed and provided in ‘Nuri-Sejong Hakdang’ and ‘Study Korean.’ Also, whether the interacting functions were being properly utilized and managed by managing the delivery system, was looked into, and it turned out that ‘Nuri-Sejong Hakdang,’ ‘Bareun Korean,’ ‘First-step Korean,’ and ‘Study Korean’ had been managing them continuously. For information management, whether the information on learning and learners was being managed was examined, and it turned out that ‘Nuri-Sejong Hakdang,’ ‘Bareun Korean,’ ‘First-step Korean,’ and ‘Study Korean’ had been utilizing the information such as the number of members, the number of learners’ visits and learning hours as PR instruments or as basic data for development. Finally, in Chapter 5, a summary of the analysis and the study results were provided; the limits of the study were presented; and some suggestions were made as to follow-up studies. It is hoped that this study would be able to be used as basic study materials on instructional design for the purpose of developing Korean cultural contents for e-learning Korean education.
