The water supply ratio of Korea was 99.1% as of 2017, which means equity in water distribution among all the people has been achieved. However, the percentage of the population drinking tap water was only 49.4% as of the same year, as many people were reluctant to actually drink tap water because of the problems associated with water tanks and aged pipes. In an effort to meet their demand for high quality tap water, various projects are being carried out—such as the introduction of advanced water treatment technology, the replacement of aged pipes, and the support for rooftop water tank removal. Nevertheless, even in the case of tap water with advanced water treatment, a lot of materials precipitate or are attached to pipe wall during the distribution process according to various hydraulic behaviors. This deteriorates water quality through the occurrence of such as black water and red water caused by all kinds of impacts and drastic hydraulic changes, consequently increasing distrust of tap water. For this reason, this research pursued the efficient removal of slime attached to the inside of pipe, and also various floating materials, by conducting unidirectional flushing and air scouring for the 42 pipelines of 21 small blocks in the water supply pipe network of Seoul Metropolitan City. An analysis was carried out concerning removal effect according to water flow direction and washing direction, as well as concerning the characteristics of solid materials in washing water and the solid materials removal effect. Also, the applicability of the washing methods was assessed in order to achieve the optimal maintenance of the pipe network. The results of the analysis on the data obtained before and after washing the 42 pipelines of the 21 small blocks are as follows. First, as for the water quality improvement effect, there was a 21.7% increase in residual chlorine, from an average of 0.23 ㎎/L before washing to 0.28 ㎎/L after washing; and a 34.8% reduction in turbidity, from an average of 0.26 NTU to 0.15 NTU. Second, a comparative analysis on the washing effects of flushing versus air scouring—based on water quality data measured before, during and after washing; and with the application of calibration coefficient for the pipe length involved in the experiment resulted in 4.2 times higher turbidity and 5.3 times higher iron concentration during washing by air scouring than by flushing. Thus air scouring was shown to have a higher washing effect than flushing. Third, to examine difference in washing effect according to the water flow direction and washing direction of pipe, the water flow direction of target pipe was deduced by utilizing the EPANET program, a pipe network analysis program; and then flushing and air scouring were carried out, respectively, either in the forward or backward direction. In the case of forward washing (washing in the same direction as water flow direction), air scouring showed a higher washing effect than flushing for the removal of such as SS. However, backward flushing showed an even higher washing effect than forward air scouring. Therefore, according to the actual condition of pipe, the washing method of higher efficiency was suggested for application. Fourth, to examine correlation between washing water turbidity and water quality items, 48 washing water samples collected during the washing of 12 pipelines were subjected to laboratory experiment and correlation analysis. The result showed that turbidity was highly correlated with the following effluent water quality items: SS(R2 =0.8328), Mn (R2 =0.8827), Fe (R2 =0.8441) and Zn (R2 =0.712). Therefore it is judged that these items may be replaced by turbidity, which can be conveniently measured on the spot, so as to enable the indirect assessment of removal effect. In addition, the influence of effluent water quality was examined based on the analysis of washing water quality characteristics. The conclusion was deduced that pretreatment for meeting water quality standard is necessary if washing water is discharged into a stream or a rain water pipe, but not necessary if discharged into a sewage pipe. It is expected that quantitative analysis concerning the relative influences of such as pipe diameter, elapsed time since installation and water pressure on washing effect, as well as concerning turbidity removal effect by washing, will contribute to the efficient future management of water supply pipe network and the improvement of water quality.
