The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of social support and self-compassion in the relationship between elementary school teachers’ work stress and their teacher efficacy. For this study, the following questions were raised. First, are there significant correlations among elementary school teachers’ work stress, teacher efficacy, social support, and self-compassion? Second, are there mediating effects of social support and self-compassion in the relationship between elementary school teachers’ work stress and their teacher efficacy? In order to examine these questions, the research data were collected from 310 elementary school teachers in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. For the data analysis, SPSS 23.0 was used for Cronbach’s alpha, descriptive statistics, and correlation analysis. AMOS 22.0 was used for structural equation modeling(SEM) analysis. The bootstrapping was used to examine the significance of mediating effects. The results of the analysis were as following: First, there were significant correlations among teachers’ work stress, teacher efficacy, social support and self-compassion. While teachers’ work stress was negatively correlated with teacher efficacy, social support and self-compassion, teacher efficacy was positively correlated with social support and self-compassion. Social support and self-compassion had a positive correlation as well. Second, social support and self-compassion had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between teachers’ work stress and teacher efficacy. Specifically, social support and self-compassion had a sequential mediating effect and self-compassion itself had a partial mediating effect in the relationship between teachers’ work stress and teacher efficacy. However, social support by itself had not have a partial mediating effect in the relationship between teachers’ work stress and teacher efficacy. In order to further examine the significance of the mediating effects, the bootstrapping was used. As a result, all mediating effects in the relation of teachers’ work stress and teacher efficacy were verified as significant. This study reveals a significant finding that the teachers’ work stress can predict their teacher efficacy. It also shows that social support and self-compassion mediate the relationship between teachers’ work stress and teacher efficacy. These results suggest that it is required to consider teachers’ work stress, social support, and self-compassion in developing counseling program for teacher efficacy.
