Typically, listening, speaking, reading, and writing are highly emphasized as the four major aspects in learning a foreign language; however, majoring a foreign language in college requires not only
fluency in the language but also a certain degree of cultural understanding of the country from which the language is originated. Such understanding of and interest in the cultural backgrounds of a
language often promote better learning in the language. Literature works, especially contemporary ones, are broadly utilized by foreign language major students as a tool to study both the languages and the cultures they are majoring in. In this perspective, this study confirms that universities in China lack active applications of contemporary Korean literatures in Korean culture lessons, analyzes the criteria that prior studies have set for choosing literature works as an effective means of understanding Korean culture, and sets its own criteria. Based on the criteria, Please Look After Mom, a contemporary Korean literature by Kyung-Sook Shin is chosen: its literary value and various perspectives on Korean culture possess great significance for Korean major students in China on having better understanding of Korean culture.
Please, Look After Mom views the culture and zeitgeist of contemporary Korea through four different perspectives: through a dad, a son, a mom, and a daughter. The dad represents a typical patriarchal Korean father; the son represents the Korean dream and new hope; the mom represents Korean mothers’ sacrifice for the family; and the daughter represents modern Korean women who challenge traditional values. But each character also has different aspects. The dad regrets his past failures as a father; the son struggles not to resemble his dad, who he swears not to become like; the mom gradually seeks her true self in the patriarchal Korean society; and the daughter emphasizes her mom and her sacrifice.
This study will teach and learn the Korean patriarchal culture based on Please, Look After Mom and will also focus on understanding social changes within Korea in which patriarchy is gradually fading. To do so, this study provides a teaching-learning model with three stages. The first stage will intrigue the audience, the second stage will introduce them the cultural aspects depicted in the literature work, and the final stage will help the audience fully absorb what they learn. The lessons will be three 100-minute classes, and they are expected to be an effective way to understand how patriarchal systems are changing in Korea and China. The lessons are designed to help junior and senior Korean major students in China better comprehend the cultural differences between Korea and China and thus improve their communication skills in Korean.
